Don’t Deny Your Chocolate Cravings

First, I want to say that chocolate can be a deadly sin for many dieters. If you’re the kind of person who can eat three chocolate kisses and then stop, that is great. But if a small piece of chocolate will start you rolling down Hershey Bar Hill and you won’t be able to stop until you’ve hit the bottom and eaten every piece of chocolate in the house then forget it. What you have is not a craving but an addiction. If you have a simple occasional craving for chocolate while dieting, don’t deny it. British researchers found that … Continue reading

Gluten-Free at the Grocery Store

Have you ever gone grocery shopping for gluten-free food before? There is a bit of a “learning curve” involved in doing this successfully. It helps if you learn about what kinds of foods are gluten-free before you ever step foot into the grocery store. After that, it is just a matter of knowing where to look. If you have to stay on a gluten-free diet, then the produce section of the grocery store is about to become your new best friend. Fruits and veggies are naturally gluten-free. This is because gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, and … Continue reading

Chocolate Festival Sabotage

I just learned that there will be the 1st annual Chocolate Festival nearby in a couple of weeks. They are featuring an “All You Can Eat” Chocolate Buffet. Hmm, do I dare go? I have to go because I have never been to one and I have to see what it is all about. There are going to be demonstrations, activities, and raffles as well. This should be interesting. Actually, chocolate has a lot of good in it, but for a dieter eating chocolate can make you lose your “mind over matter” motto. Every once in a while, especially if … Continue reading

Frugal Month in Review: September 2008

Now that September is come and gone and the kiddies are settled back into school and regular routines, it is time to welcome the fall. Still, there is plenty of good stuff that went on in September, including a bunch of ways to save money. September 1st Frugal Living Week in Review: August 25th Through August 31st Food and back to school are the two things on my mind this week. I e-mailed my son’s teacher ahead of time to ask about additional supplies that she might need for the classroom. She said that she usually asks parents for antibacterial … Continue reading

Valorie’s Breastfeeding Index

Later today I will post a review of the baby blog of 2007 so why does breastfeeding get its own category? Well, in part as an answer to readers who want to read what I’ve written on breastfeeding. I’ve written so much on breastfeeding at this point that you all have asked for an index of sorts so it’s easier to find what you’re looking for. It’s also in part because I’ve become known as the breastfeeding lady. . .guru. . .whatever you want to call it. I’ve been at this breastfeeding business for a long time and many of … Continue reading

At Home: Plan some diet friendly … Continue reading

The Skinny on Skinny Water

Drinking lots of water is one of my ‘tricks’ for optimizing weight loss. I find that it gives me something to do (instead of reaching for food), fills up my stomach so I am not as hungry, staves off cravings for sweets (often times a craving for sweets is really thirst), and keeps me from drinking my real favorite drink: soda. Diet gurus have also reported that drinking ice cold water causes your body to expend calories drinking it because it has to warm the water up. Water is surely the perfect no calorie drink. However, there is a newer … Continue reading
