The No Sugar Diet

On Monday morning, I was chatting with some of the other moms on the soccer field. Our kindergarten kids participate in pee wee soccer two mornings a week. One mom started telling me that with the exception of natural sugar found in fruit and vegetables, she completely gave up sugar six months earlier. As someone who loves to bake and never met a sweet thing I didn’t like, I was both impressed and shocked. I know I need to cut down on my own sugar consumption. While obesity isn’t a problem for me right now, there are so many other … Continue reading

Getting enough Potassium While Dieting

“I cramp up after workouts so I normally blend 1 banana with my protein shake mix and 2 cups of soy milk. Do bananas convert to fructose like other fruits that are more juicy such as oranges, apples, berries, etc?” One banana has 200 calories, 51g carbohydrates, 6g fiber, 28g sugar and 2g protein. One orange has 85 calories, 21g carbohydrates, 4g fiber, 17g sugar and 1g protein. One apple has 65 calories, 17g carbohydrates, 3g fiber, 13g sugar and no protein. One cup of strawberries has 49 calories, 12g carbohydrates, 3g fiber, 7g sugar and 1g protein. The fructose … Continue reading

Turkey as Diet Food

I know many of us consider turkey an annual binging food that we only see on Thanksgiving so what I am about to say may shock you. Turkey is an excellent diet food. Mind you, I said turkey, not turkey with stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie and whipped cream. I’m a very busy mother of two boys so finding time to prepare healthy meals for myself between kiddie meals and bottles is practically an impossibility. Like most mothers, if I have nothing available that can be microwaved in less than two minutes and eaten, I usually fall back … Continue reading

Coming Off Beyonce’s Maple Syrup Diet, Day #1

What I’ve been calling Beyonce’s Maple Syrup Diet is actually the Master Cleanse which was originally created by Stanley Burroughs many years ago. I do not advocate starvation diets. I prefer not to think of this as a “diet” but as a way to cleanse one’s system and break addictions prior to getting started on a sensible lifestyle plan. People have used it to break caffeine and chocolate addictions as well as those more serious addictions that I am simply not qualified to discuss here. I’ve used this cleanse successfully and been a long-time participant in the Beyonce’s Maple Syrup … Continue reading

Momma’s on a Diet: Weigh In: Week 1

So it’s been a week since my diet started and this morning I had to get back on the scales. Having got on them last week and had quite a shock, I wasn’t really looking forward to repeating the experience this week I can tell you! Having done everything possible with the exception of the cat to delay the inevitable, I noticed my hubby and boys standing with their jackets on waiting for me to put mine on ready to leave home to start our work/school day, so ran to the bathroom, jumped on the scales, and read what they … Continue reading

Islamic Diet – What is Halal?

We were talking about halal in the Muslim forum the other day, so I thought I should address it here. Technically, halal means allowed by Allah, or lawful. What it comes to food, there are very specific things that make an item halal. [h]No Pork or Pork Products[/h] It is well-known that Muslims must not eat pork, but many people are unaware of the different varieties of pork. Although non-pork versions exist, the following should always be scrutinized for pork content: Sausage Hot dogs Ham Bacon Meatballs Potted meat “Meat” sauce Kolaches In addition, many restaurants use lard for cooking; … Continue reading

Top Ten Reasons Why Dieting Is Bad

I love lists. I am a huge fan of lists. As we count down the last few days of April and we get ready for the Sizzling Summer Slim Down to begin in may with the Abs Diet plan – I thought I would share a few lists with you. Here are the top ten reasons why dieting is bad: 1. Lowering calories may help you lose weight, but it also makes it harder for you to get your daily-recommended vitamins and proteins. 2. Dieting can cause your body to go into diet shock. 3. Some crash diets cause you … Continue reading

Are You Thinking of Starting A Diet?

If you are thinking of going on a diet, it’s important to consider what you want the diet to do. If you are going on a diet to trim off a few extra pounds (think less than 10) then chances are you will be successful. If you are considering long-term weight control; a diet is a short-term, not a long-term solution. Most diets, if followed exactly, will certainly prove to make you somewhat lighter on the scales. However, most of the weight you lose in the initial stages of any diet is water weight. If you are using a crash … Continue reading

When Your Baby Has Food Allergies

Recently, I decided to get my baby tested for food allergies. With the history that my two boys have had, I just wanted to make sure that there were no lingering issues as we moved forward with food trialing. I had been suspicious that eggs were causing a problem with my little one when I was breastfeeding. It was one of the foods I had cut out of my diet when he was having all of his tummy issues. But, none of my children have ever been diagnosed with your typical IgE food allergies. IgE stands for Immunoglobulin E which is … Continue reading
