Twelve Months Post Partum: An Exercising Journey Part V

Once I had come to the conclusion that the only way to get some semblance of my stomach back, was to, believe it or not, lose more weight.  I thought that surely if I could get back down to the weight I was before pregnancy wreaked havoc on my midsection, that I might see a slimmer, love handleless, figure in the mirror.   Even though the task was clear and seemingly simple, there really is nothing easy about losing the last few stubborn pregnancy pounds…again since I decided to move the finish line once again.  I wish there was a way … Continue reading

Michael Savage Thinks Epilepsy Medication Affects Cognition

Michael Savage is a radio personality who has been known to make some controversial statements. Recently, he said that epilepsy medication causes “cognitive problems”. This is not true. His misinformation might make people assume that children, and adults, who have epilepsy also have a cognitive disability. Michael Savage is a conservative American radio host. His show is called “The Michael Savage Show”, and I think it may have also been called “The Savage Nation”. I’m not entirely sure because I rarely listen to the radio anymore. However, I know that Michael Savage is someone who has gained quite a bit … Continue reading

Celebrity Vegans – Part 3

And my final installment of celebrity vegans. Here’s a few actors left over from the last blog plus a hodgepodge of others: Casey Affleck – Ben Affleck’s younger brother is also an animal rights activist who decided to go vegan. Woody Harrelson – How could anyone as green as Harrelson not be a vegan? He committed to the diet at the fairly young age of 24. He credits it with providing him with more energy and glowing skin. Ted Danson – Harrelson’s co-star on “Cheers,” Danson, an environmentalist, just recently became a vegan in an attempt to naturally lower his … Continue reading

Treatment For Pancreatic Cancer

Are you becoming a pancreatic cancer expert? My hope for you is that you never need this information but it is here for you. We have covered symptoms, test and risk factors and now we need to talk about treatments. Pancreatic cancer is has a low survivability rate because of the fact that it is usually diagnosed after it has spread and therefor it is in a later stage for diagnosis. However pancreatic cancer does have low survival rates. For exocrine pancreatic cancer if you are diagnosed with stage 1A your 5 year survival rate is only 14% and that … Continue reading

Girl Who Had Six Organs Transplanted Is Thriving

A nine year old girl, who lives in Maine, is bouncing back after surviving organ transplant surgery. She had a total of six organs transplanted, to replace the ones that were damaged by a large tumor, (which was also removed in a previous surgery). I think this is really impressive! Alannah Shevenell lives in Portland, Maine, with her grandparents. There doesn’t seem to be any information about where her parents are at, or the circumstances that resulted in Alannah living with her grandparents, instead of her parents. Alannah is only nine years old, but she has been through a lot. … Continue reading

Teen Weight Loss Surgery and Insurance Coverage

Weight loss surgery might be an option for adults who are morbidly obese. What about for teenagers? Most private health insurance companies will not cover this type of procedure. Teenagers who are covered by Medicaid or CHIP have a better chance of having their weight loss surgery covered. Every surgery, no matter how big or small, comes with risk. While certain kinds of weight loss surgeries may be a recommended option for some adults who are morbidly obese, this doesn’t mean that it is completely and entirely safe in all cases. Not every private health insurance plan will cover this … Continue reading

Starting a Journey to be Healthy

Well this is the start of my journey through weight loss. If you have not read any of my blogs before I was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer 12/29/2005/ I underwent chemo therapy, radiation, a lumpectomy, bilateral prophylactic mastectomies and multiple reconstructions. I have done everything medically and surgically that I could do in order to attempt to prevent a recurrence. With my particular type of breast cancer; triple negative; the rate of recurrence is higher and the survival rate was lower so I want to see what I can do to help me be here for my husband … Continue reading

Medical Tourism – A Way Around Insurance?

What happens if you need a medical procedure, or a surgery, and your health insurance won’t cover the entire cost? Many people are turning to hospitals outside of the United States for their health care needs. The cost is often less than the out of pocket expense a person would have to pay if he or she went through American doctors, and used American health insurance. In general, health insurance is a good thing to have. It helps many people to be able to afford to see a doctor when they need to, to purchase prescription medication, and to receive … Continue reading

Eating Disorders – Mixed Messages

As I was reading up on some recent research I came across two related to eating disorders/weight, and while reading them I realized how many mixed messages we are sending. One was about a spike in eating disorders in older women while the other focused on the link between body weight and personality. While I found the information in both articles interesting, there were pieces that were almost contradictory in nature. It got me thinking about the messages we send out about eating disorders. We complain about living in a culture obsessed with thinness, and often blame the media and … Continue reading

Insurer Not Covering 1-800 GET THIN Lawsuit

You may have seen billboards that say 1-800-GET THIN on them. The idea is that if you are interested in getting Lap-Band surgery, you would call that number. The company has been sued for false advertising. Their insurance company, National Fire & Marine Insurance Co., have refused to pay to defend them, because the insurer feels that the surgery company falsely stated information on an application. The company behind the billboards that say 1-800-GET THIN is, essentially, a weight loss company. The way they help people to lose weight is to provide them with Lap-Band surgery. They are affiliated with … Continue reading
