Another Santa Reprimanded at Disney World

An official Disney Santa at Epcot We’ve learned that adults are banned from wearing Disney costumes to a Disney park. We also know that any kids old enough (the cutoff is 9 or 10) also can’t do so, at least not if their costumes are too realistic. Now we have another look to add to the list of things not allowed at Disney: Santa Claus. Official Disney-sanctioned Santa Claus’s still make seasonal appearances at Disney World. What’s going to get you kicked out, or at least reprimanded, is if you too closely resemble Kris Kringle. The Huffington Post reports. Atlantan … Continue reading

Menopause and Muscle Tone

About a year ago, I got out of the shower. I was surprised to looked down and see my grandmother’s legs. No, my beloved, dearly departed grandmother hadn’t come into the bathroom. But, I noticed my legs had started to look like hers. Before you ask how I knew so much about my grandmother’s legs, let me explain. I lived with my grandmother for almost twenty years after the death of my mother when I was 19. My grandfather had died about five years before that. With my father remarrying, I decided to spend my 20’s and most of my … Continue reading

Why Aren’t I Losing Weight?

A question that is asked by many is this…why aren’t I losing weight when I am eating healthy and exercising? This can be very discouraging. It seems like you are doing everything right, yet the pounds aren’t dropping. Well there are some important things to consider. The first is that it could be your body is gaining muscle. This is especially true if you have been doing a lot of resistance (strength) training. Another potential reason is that while you may not be losing pounds, you could be losing inches. This is why it’s always a good idea to not … Continue reading

The Benefits of Weight Training

Today we are going to be looking into the benefits of weight training. Unless you are interested in toning your muscles, you might skip this type of fitness. But weight training isn’t just for becoming more muscular. One of the benefits not everyone is aware of is that it can help fight off muscle loss. As we age, we lose lean muscle mass and guess what replaces it? Fat! It just comes with aging and there isn’t much you can do about it, unless you replace the fat with muscle mass…which can only happen if you implement weight training. The … Continue reading

Family Fitness with Your Preteens and Teens

In this blog I am going to be talking about family fitness with your preteens and teens. This is definitely a whole new ball game, since engaging with this age group can be more of a challenge. The reality is that preteens and teens would rather be hanging out with their friends, but don’t take it personally. We just have to really instill in our children the importance of maintaining good family relations and spending time together. What better way to do this than bringing in some type of exercise? You don’t even have to tell your children that this … Continue reading

In.gredients without Packaging

Part of being green is using natural ingredients, buying locally grown and produced products, and carrying your own reusable bags to the store. But, what about all the packing your products are in? Flour you use to make homemade bread comes in a bag and some oranges come in a mesh-like bag. Are you really making that much of a difference if you still have product packaging waste? Well, it may seem a little uber-green, but it is reported that we toss out 1.4 billion pounds of waste every day in America. And, even more alarming to me is that … Continue reading

Pregnancy and America’s Next Top Model

Recently I found myself enthralled with season fifteen of America’s Next Top Model. I found it fascinating to watch the group of skinning and not necessarily very pretty model wannabes undergoing transformation after transformation. I found my self coveting some of the girls’ long hair made even longer with extensions. After cutting my hair short time and time again over the past two and half years, I am trying to grow it out again. As tempting as extensions would be, they are not for me and as awesome as it would be to lose the extra belly fat to resume … Continue reading

Low-Calorie Potato Chips Contribute to Weight Gain

I’m not a big potato chip eater but for those who are, you might think that going the low-calorie way is better. After all, you get to enjoy the salty crunch of a chip yet you aren’t taking in as many calories. Well according to a new study published by the American Psychological Association (I am still trying to figure that one out…what do they have to do with this?), low-calorie chips could actually be contributing to weight gain. That’s because these low-calorie chips contain fat substitutes. It is believed that these can confuse the body’s regulation of food intake, … Continue reading

Standing Up

Recently my shoulder has been hurting. I’m not sure if it is due to having a “I-want-to-be-held” twenty-or-so pound child or if it has more to do with the large amount of time I spend at a desk with fingers on a keyboard each day. Either way, it had reached a tipping point recently. At first it was my wrists, which were quite relieved by an ergonomic keyboard (very recommended if you’re having the same trouble I was). The keyboard helped the braces come off and the pain disappear. The back was a new issue though. I wasn’t entirely sure … Continue reading

23andMe Has Top Ten List Of Genetic Findings From 2010

23andMe, a company that sells genetic testing kits, has released their list of the top ten genetic findings from 2010. They feel that these were the most interesting and significant genetic findings from the past year. Research about the human genome is still ongoing, and it will be interesting to see what is learned about heritable diseases in the 2011. For genealogists, these discoveries in genetics may reveal a lot about what diseases or conditions run in a family. 23andMe published their top ten list on their blog, which is called “The Spittoon”. They sell DNA test kits that can … Continue reading
