Protein and Weight Loss

Whenever people ask me for advice about how to lose weight, I inevitably have to touch on the topic of protein. For so many years, the medical community has been telling us to only eat tiny bits of protein in order to lose weight. Well, they’re right, kind of, but mostly wrong. Yes, if you cut back on protein, you’ll cut calories and IF you don’t make up those calories with other foods, you’ll lose weight. The problem is, you’ll feel hungry and deprived all the time and you’ll be losing the wrong weight. The human body needs protein. Every … Continue reading

Weight a Minute! The Unfortunate Potato Salad Incident

My mom makes to-die-for potato salad. She starts with potatoes that have been baked in foil and then diced, adds chopped radishes, green onions, olives and sweet pickles, and then stirs in a sauce of mayonnaise, mustard, and reserved sweet pickle juice. The crowning touch – bacon bits. This salad has been made for every special occasion during my whole lifetime, but because it’s labor intensive, it’s only made maybe twice a year, if that. Two weeks ago, I’d had a great week. I was making wise food choices, I’d been exercising, I’d taken off another pound (and got to … Continue reading

Weight a Minute!: Accentuate the Positive

You know what – I may be an overweight woman, but I’m pretty cute, if I do say so myself. There are days when my negative body image takes control, but when I’m thinking realistically and impartially, I must say, I’m a looker. I have beautiful eyes, my hair has some really gorgeous golden highlights in it (which are natural) and I have naturally curly hair too. Notice I’m not telling you that I’m a really nice person, or that I have a sweet spirit – those things are true, of course, but who wants to hear that? I’m talking … Continue reading

Weight a Minute! — Seeking a Higher Power

I’ve held my weight steady at 264.2 all this week. Is that the weight I want? Of course not. But I was up to 269.0 at the beginning of this month, and it fluctuated up and down like crazy for the first two weeks. I’m pretty delighted that it hasn’t budged for a week. It’s progress. Today I’d like to talk with you about a concept I have found to be invaluable in my journey. I blogged a while back about how I’ve been looking for love in all the wrong places, turning to food instead of to God or … Continue reading

Weight Loss Week in Review August 15 to August 24

Have you missed anything in the weight loss blog this week? The week in review is our way of catching you up. Grab a cup of coffee and sit down to peruse the blog, and catch up on your reading. August 15 Hey, You’re a Fatti Bumbalatti! No, I haven’t taken to insulting readers. This is an interesting article on a new weight loss tool–a personal robot. While I don’t think that the robot insults you into getting thinner, it does use one powerful psychological tool–guilt. Complete with moving eyes and speaking capabilities, researchers hope that by having someone remind … Continue reading

Weight a Minute! Society’s Obsession with Food

Today’s Weight: 261.4 My back went out last week, forcing me into a sedentary state. If I’m not exercising, I’m not losing – a fact I’ve learned about myself. Sigh. Last week (before I threw my back out) I took my ten-year-old for a mother/daughter outing to Wendy’s, her favorite place to eat. Standing in line, I overheard a man and a woman talking behind me. She was trying to decide which of the items on the dollar menu she wanted, and finally settled on a junior cheeseburger, chicken nuggets, and fries. Her husband said to her, “If you want … Continue reading

Weight a Minute! Circles, Triangles, and Puzzle Pieces

Current Weight: 260.2 That’s not the worst of weights, and it’s not the best of weights. You’ll recall my gleeful ramblings about protein when last we met – well, I made a tactical error and ran out before pay day. So I was more than half a week without a protein supplement, and we’ve already established that I’m not a big protein partaker-of, and so I lost some of the benefits right there. When I went grocery shopping the other day, I stocked up, so hopefully that won’t happen again. I’m at a point right now where I feel like … Continue reading

Weight a Minute! – The Power of Protein

Current Weight: 258.8 (Total weight loss: 15.2 pounds) I haven’t been contributing to the weight loss blog lately because, to be honest, I didn’t feel I had a lot to say. Sure, I know how to talk the talk, but I haven’t known how to walk the walk – how to make that jump between knowing and doing. My lack of confidence was compounded by the fact that since I injured my foot, exercise had become a thing of the past for me. I solved the exercise problem by heading to our local gym, where my husband gets a discounted … Continue reading

How I Lost 40 Pounds in 8 Weeks

After my first son was born it took a little while for the extra weight to start coming off. He was three months old before I really began to notice that I was losing the extra pounds I put on during my pregnancy. I didn’t make any changes to my diet, but I did breastfeed. I lost my thirty pounds of pregnancy weight by the time he was five months old. After my daughter was born, I decided I wanted to make the most of my breastfeeding metabolism to lose not just my pregnancy weight, but a little more as … Continue reading
