Weight a Minute! Getting a Life Coach

I've frequently heard of celebrities and other rich-type people hiring personal trainers, personal stylists, personal dressers, personal assistants-all these persons who personally see to their every need. In some ways, that sounds fabulous. I could use a maid, a cook, a nanny, a driver, a gardener . . . well, okay, I don't really have a garden, but I have a flower bed, and I think that counts.

What I really need, though, is a life coach. Someone who can take a look at my life and clearly see what I need to do to get where I need to get, who will chart out for me the things I must change in order to improve my health, and will break it all down into simple steps that I can actually do. I need a coach who will see when I've met those goals and give me more, one who will notice when I'm slacking off and kick me back into the game. One who won't let me give up on myself and slip back into the gutter of complacency.

I thought about this long and hard, and today, I hired one.

This coach will be with me all the time to council me on my food choices, exercise habits, and water intake. She'll remind me when to take my nutrients and help me determine what activities are the most beneficial to me, from a weight-loss perspective but also from a spiritual perspective. She'll point out when I'm being whiny and when I do need to slow down. It will be her job twenty-four hours a day to see to my well-being.

Sounds expensive, doesn't it? But that's the best part-it's not.

It's free.

You see, the life coach I've hired is myself.

I'm really good at looking at other people's lives and seeing what they could do to better their situations. I know how Betty can overcome her addiction to salt, and I know how Sally could lose five pounds by giving up her daily diet soda. I can even give Jane a thousand tips on how to improve her marriage. I know the principles of weight loss. I know what I need to be doing. I just need to listen to myself.

So today, I looked at my life objectively, and I made a list of some things I can start doing today that will improve my life. I'm going to follow my list carefully, and whenever I need to, I can call out my Life Coach Persona to bolster me up and keep me moving forward. I may have to get a little tough with myself. I might have to give myself a stern talking-to from time to time. But I know myself better than anyone, so I'm the perfect person to do it. I'll let you know how my coach and I get along this week. But one thing's for sure - I have no intention of firing her. We have a ninety-to-one hundred year contract.
