Pregnancy Rates are Dropping

A report from the latest issue of National Vital Statistics Reports (Volume 58, Number 4, October 14, 2009) shows that pregnancy rates are dropping. The data also indicates a significant drop in abortion rates, which leads me to believe that pregnancy prevention is on the rise. Whether this is a result of increased abstinence among teens or birth control is under debate. The pregnancy rate for young teens dropped by 48%. The total pregnancy rate has dropped by 11 percent. These numbers do not include the recent rise in teen pregnancy since 2006. So why are people having fewer babies? … Continue reading

You feel as though you are starving yourself and know that the workouts you are doing should be making your butt melt off but every morning you end up staring at the very same numbers on the scale. Nothing is happening and you’re about to dive into some ice cream to get over your feeling of inadequacy. Well, don’t touch that spoon! Here … Continue reading

Are We in a Depression?

I was reading the Facebook statuses for my friends when I came across a very interesting one about how we should try to get as many free groceries as possible because we are currently in a depression. The words economic depression, for me, conjure up the era of of previous generations, when my father had drop out of school in order to get any work he could to help support his large family, such as picking crumbs of coal off of the railroad tracks to sell them. I envision long lines where people are waiting for soup, the only meal … Continue reading

Weight Loss: To Weigh or Not To Weigh

To weigh or not to weigh, that is the question. I know that every expert will tell you not to weigh yourself more than once a week. They will tell you not to be as concerned with your weight, but more so to be concerned with health and fitness. Personally, I cannot do that. Don’t get me wrong. I am very concerned about my health and being fit, but I am an obsessive weight taker as well. I make myself crazy with it at times. I find that if I do not keep up with my latest statistics I will … Continue reading

Visiting the Statue of Liberty’s Crown

There was a time when I thought the day would never come that I would be able to give my daughter the same opportunity my parents gave to me during our first trip to New York City nearly 30 years ago—the chance to view one the most populated places on Earth from the Statue of Liberty’s iconic headpiece. According to the documents released by a New York congressman on the Fourth of July, the National Park Service is considering reopening Lady Liberty’s crown for the first time since the September 11th terrorist attacks. U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner says the park … Continue reading

The Food Pyramid WILL Make You Fat!

Every five years, the federal government issues official dietary guidelines for Americans. Our children are taught these guidelines at school and school cafeterias are expected to follow them. The general population is expected to follow these guidelines as the way to a healthy body. Well, researchers are finally questioning what I’ve known for the past decade: Are the national guidelines advising Americans to eat a low-fat diet actually feeding the current obesity epidemic? Well, DUH! According to the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York are saying that the current guidelines have … Continue reading

Weight a Minute! A Few of My Not Favorite Things

Nights without sleeping and children with yelling, Hours on footsies with frantic-paced selling, Trying to cope with the stress it all brings – These are a few of my not favorite things . . . Lisa Pietsch has been telling me for a long time that I need to get more sleep and reduce stress if I want to lose weight. I understand the principle, but to understand it and then to apply it are two entirely different things. With four small children, books to finish editing, a house to clean, and home schooling, my life is pretty hectic. Then … Continue reading

Marriage News: Are Marriages Really In a Minority?

In my news hopping this morning, I came across another news byte covering an American Community Survey that revealed, for the first time in American history that married couples accounted for less than 50% of U.S. households. Why is that? I think there are three reasons for this statistic. But first let me tell you what I don’t think is causing this statistic. It’s not the rising divorce rate or the convenience of an easy divorce. The simple fact is, my generation grew up with divorce being a reasonable option. Divorce exists. We don’t see it as an easy out … Continue reading
