The Need for Protein (Part I)

I’ve never been much of a meat eater. I was never a big fan of beans. I stopped drinking milk because it made me congested. I wasn’t getting enough protein. That all changed when I became pregnant. I had read over and over again the importance of getting enough protein while pregnant. The recommendation for pregnant women is 80 -110 grams of protein per day. I discovered two things about protein from my pre-pregnancy research and my first pregnancy: First, not all proteins are created, or rather manufactured, equally. Second, more foods contain protein than I originally thought (so maybe … Continue reading

Confessions of a Foodie Mom, Week Two: Countering My Top Ten Sabotaging Thoughts

I’ll bite the bullet by putting the news up front: I am exactly the same weight today as I was last Saturday. At one point in the week I was down a pound; now I’m not. I do realize that fluctuations of two or three pounds can be water weight. So I guess I should be glad I haven’t gained. But I know I can do better. I mentioned last week that I was in a group this past spring that used the principles of Cognitive Therapy. Cognitive therapy is usually short-term counseling focused on helping people to reframe the … Continue reading

Two Studies About Protein

Dr. Wayne Campbell and his colleagues at Purdue’s University Laboratory for Integrative Research in Nutrition, Fitness, and Aging conducted a weight loss study of 46 overweight or obese women. The women were instructed to follow one of two reduced-calorie diets. Protein was 18% of the caloric intake in one group’s diet; it was 30% of the caloric intake of the second group’s diet. Each group consumed six ounces of lean pork per day for twelve weeks. It was their only meat source. The result was that the women who ate a higher percentage of protein were better at maintaining lean … Continue reading

An experimental drug called Eteplirsen might be helpful for boys who have Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Your Blood Type Might Affect Your Risk for Stroke

A new study finds that your blood type might actually affect your risk of having a stroke. It is not the only risk factor, but is something that people should be aware of. Your blood type is determined by genetics that your parents handed down to you. This means that your risk of stroke is something that can run in your family as well. What is your blood type? You got your blood type from one gene that was passed to you from your mother, and another gene that was passed to you from your father. Your blood type could … Continue reading

Scientists May Have Found a Way to “Turn Off” Peanut Allergies

Parents of kids who have peanut allergies know how dangerous life can be for their child. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was a way to “turn off” your child’s allergy? Scientists may have found a way to do exactly that. More studies are needed, but, it could be the start of something amazing. Children who have peanut allergies can go into analyphlaxis if they encounter even the smallest amount of peanuts. Obviously, the child has to avoid eating foods that contain peanuts. However, that alone cannot ensure your child’s safety. People who are allergic to peanuts can have serious … Continue reading

The Incredible Edible Egg and Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time in a woman’s life that demands protein. Without sufficient protein, the baby cannot grow properly and well. Babies are basically “built” out of protein. As such pregnant women are encouraged to eat anywhere from eighty to one hundred and ten grams of protein every single day. Eating so much protein may seem like and impossible feat, but there exists a very compact protein and nutrient packed food that can help meet the protein needs of almost all pregnant women. This amazing protein source is the incredible edible egg. Perfectly packaged in an ellipsoid shape, the single … Continue reading

More Television Equals Shorter Life

Oh, this was a health study I hated to read about. A study in the most recent issue of the Journal of the America College of Cardiology says that “prolonged sitting” such as in front of the television and computer is bad for your health. The study was conducted by Emmanuel Stamatakis, a Ph.D. epidemiologist at University College London, and his colleagues. The study followed 4,500 Scottish people who were 35 and older and recorded their television time, computer time, and other health behaviors. More than half of those in the study admitted to watching television or sitting at the … Continue reading

Sugar for Breakfast?

I’m sure you have heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well, according to studies that is not just some old wives tale but pure truth. Studies have shown that people who eat breakfast maintain a healthier body weight and are more alert. However, what you eat for breakfast is just as important as eating breakfast.
