Fun Smoothies for Kids

Recently, I introduced you to a new brand of chocolate milk called TruMoo. TruMoo Chocolate milk is not a chocolate drink. It is made from real milk but void of high fructose corn syrup and growth hormones. The milk is not organic yet it does eliminate two dangerous elements. Growth hormones and high fructose corn syrup have no place on a child’s menu. If your children love chocolate milk as much as mine and you are looking for a less expensive yet safe option then TruMood may be for you. I know my children love it. They ask for chocolate … Continue reading

Bye-Bye Back-to-School Breakfast Blues

I’m done doing battle with back-to-school breakfasts. I’ve finally decided to stop whining about the inevitable and face my fear head-on. My daughter heads back to school next week, so the end of leisurely breakfasts is in sight. No more four-course meals that start with fresh fruit smoothies and end with a little chocolate something-something. We’re going back to the basics with these make-ahead recipes that I culled from Food Network and my own mother: GRANDMA’S GORP Ingredients: Your child’s favorite cereal (we use Cheerios, Kix, Cocoa Puffs, Fruit Loops, Corn Pops or a mix of two or three) Your … Continue reading

Help, I Hate Breakfast!

Breakfast does not have to include eggs, bacon, cereal, oatmeal or any of the traditional breakfast fair. Breakfast has always been an especially challenging time for me because I dislike most breakfast foods. If I never ate a scrambled egg again I would not miss it. In fact, I would rather just skip breakfast all together and be happy with my cup of coffee. I have tried to convince myself that with enough creamer my cup of coffee is actually an energizing breakfast smoothie. Somehow I never quite convinced myself of that theory. So I started my quest for breakfast … Continue reading

Drink a High Protein Fruit Smoothie to Fight Morning Sickness

It can be hard to stomach breakfast when you are pregnant if you are suffering from morning sickness. The last thing you feel like doing is eating. Ironically, eating is the best thing for your morning sickness, provided you eat the right types of food. It used to be that experts always suggested saltine crackers or something similar, and some still do, but recently it has been found that foods high in protein tend to have a bigger impact on morning sickness than foods high in carbohydrates. Many women have good luck with eating fruit as well, so an easy … Continue reading

Fabulous Smoothies Your Preschooler Will Drink

I have the most stubborn breakfast-eater on the face of the planet. Oh, I am sure that there are some children who might almost measure up, but my daughter will happily go without food until noon if I let her. I try not to let her. In fact, I have been known to beg, cajole, plead, threaten, and use all sorts of untoward parenting behaviors just to get her to eat a few bites. I believe that she is truly not all that hungry in the morning, but unfortunately she has blood sugar crashes if she doesn’t eat until later … Continue reading

Pantry Cooking for Your Preschooler

January and February are not my most inspired months for cooking. My daughter would love to eat cheesy wraps, carrots sticks, and peas and corn all winter. Ok, she would actually like to eat ice cream and chocolate all winter, but I won’t let her. If you’re trying to have a stash of meals and snacks on hand in the pantry for your preschooler and you’re feeling less than inspired, here are a few ideas. Healthy crackers are one of our staples. One of our local companies makes flax seed, herb, and sesame crackers. Now, before you insist that your … Continue reading

Encouraging Your Teens to Eat Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day… so the saying goes. But try telling that to your family! My younger brother used to hit the snooze on his alarm clock until the last possible second, then throw on some close and rush off to high school without eating. There are lots of “good” reasons for skipping breakfast: I wanted to sleep in. There’s nothing good to eat. It takes too long to make something. I’m not hungry when I first wake up. I want to lose weight. But research has shown that eating breakfast can help boost concentration … Continue reading

The Sneaky Mama and the Quintessential Smoothie: Getting Your Kids to Drink Their Fruits and Veggie

In the Sneaky Mama’s last blog, we talked about a few tricks to get the seriously picky eater to eat more fruits and veggies. If your eater is just moderately picky, he’ll willingly (or with light coaxing) try new foods. If you consistently offer new foods, eventually he will come around and eat something besides dinosaur chicken nuggets and macaroni and cheese. However, the seriously picky eater is one who gags, chokes or spews new foods. My daughter is one such seriously picky eater, and if you ask her if she’s ever had a fruit or vegetable she’ll say, “No … Continue reading

Nutritious Summer Foods For Toddlers

Parents of toddlers often have a dilemma on their hands at meal time and snack time. There’s a hungry little person who needs something to eat. That hungry little person may regularly change what he or she will and won’t eat. Also, as the person responsible for the health of that hungry little person you have your own ideas and plans for what kinds of things you will serve. Feeding your toddler right can be a challenge. Fortunately, summer time is here and there are quite a few nutritious foods available that most toddlers love to sink their teeth into. … Continue reading

Freebies from Barnes & Noble

When I think of Barnes & Noble, the first thing that comes to mind is books. Then, I remember that there is usually a cafe located inside these bookstores. Right now, there are two different deals going on that can get you a drink from the B&N cafe for free. The cafe that you see inside your local Barnes & Noble store is not a Starbucks, (even though they sell Starbucks coffee). It is actually a Barnes & Noble cafe, and it will have food and drink items on its menu that cannot be found at a Starbucks. The people … Continue reading
