Benefits of Shopping the Easter Clearance Deals

Head to your favorite stores the day after to get some great Easter clearance deals. The bargains are so good that I know one mom who puts off the Easter baskets and the egg hunts until after Easter, just so she doesn’t have to pay full price. Smart lady. Many stores start there Easter clearance on Monday, the day after Easter, with bargains from 50 to 90 percent off. Don’t wait long, though, because these clearance sales, especially for popular stores such as Target, are very popular. Zone in on the candy first, and freeze it for later use. You … Continue reading

High-Tech Tool to Keep Trick-or-Treaters Safe

Long before Colorado authorities discovered the mutilated remains of 10-year-old Jessica Ridgeway in an open field, and New Jersey investigators found 12-year-old Autumn Pasquale’s body dumped in a recycling container, I never considered allowing my 8-year-old daughter to trick-or-treat alone… or even with a group of friends. In Jessica’s case, she was snatched earlier this month while making the 1,000-foot walk to her school. Late Tuesday, 17-year-old Austin Reed Sigg was arrested and charged with her horrific death. Meanwhile, in New Jersey, police recently arrested 15-year-old Justin Robinson and his 17-year-old brother for allegedly murdering Autumn in order to obtain … Continue reading

What Food is Gluten-Free At Starbucks?

In my experience, it isn’t easy to determine with absolute certainty what foods or drinks truly are gluten-free at cafes or restaurants. When you go to Starbucks, you really cannot read the labels to find out about the ingredients that are in the foods. I did a little bit of investigating, and here is what I found. One of my absolute favorite places to grab a treat from is Starbucks. I go there at least once a week. Since I discovered that I have a gluten allergy, it has become a lot harder to figure out what will be safe … Continue reading

If you don’t own festive Fourth of July clothing, then you haven’t been to Old Navy this month. Walking into the popular chain store is like being swallowed by a giant Patriotic Fruit Pizza. What’s more, Old Navy is running a Buy Two; Get the Third Item Free sale all weekend long, so if you are still in need of Independence Day-themed gear to wear to fun-filled Fourth of July festivals, parades or parties, you know where to shop. Kid-Friendly Scrapbooks

Life would be so much easier if my young daughter was into Scooby-Doo, Mickey Mouse, or Sesame Street. Instead, she likes obscure kiddie characters that are not featured as scrapbook embellishments. Dang. I so wanted to create a layout featuring her favorite Nickelodeon characters, but I can’t find a single company that sells “Penguins of Madagascar” stickers, stamps or die cuts. Ditto for “Bubble Guppies” and “Max and Ruby.” However, if your kid is into Elmo, Cookie Monster or Big Bird, then the scrapbook supply world is your oyster. Good gracious, have you seen how much Sesame Street scrapbook merchandise … Continue reading

Tailgating Fun

If you are a football fanatic, then this is your weekend to cheer. Today’s college football marathon will soon be followed by the kick-off of NFL Sunday, all-day, wall-to-wall coverage of all things having to do with grown men in tights running after a ball… and each other. Do you need another reason to party? Aside from the traditional game day hype, nothing is more essential to tailgating than food. If you are looking for fun football themed recipes to add to your tailgate shindig, then consider the following: FOOTBALL CHEESE DIP Ingredients: 2 packages (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened … Continue reading

Fruit Flavored Fudge

Earlier today I mentioned that I was over Christmas cookies. I have eaten more than my share for the rest of the year and once my daughter and I deliver the rest of the tins we put together for friends and business associates our house will officially be cookie-free. The only problem… it’s now a fudge-filled zone. Blame my neighbor. She just dropped off some fabulous homemade fudge (see recipes below). And not just any delicious chocolate fudge (that would have sufficed), nooooo she had to concoct fudge infused with cherries and eggnog. Oh how I love the holidays. CHOCOLATE … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: One Hot Hotel and the Mystery Behind Hotel Soap

ONE HOT HOTEL In a previous blog I touted the generosity of Hollywood billionaire David “DreamWorks” Geffen who recently donated his newly renovated hotel in Malibu to area residents displaced by the raging wildfires. Geffen’s posh Malibu Beach Inn hadn’t even hosted its first full house of new customers before the devastating fires erupted and the Hollywood mogul turned his property into a shelter for firefighters and evacuees. The inn’s manager told news reporters they couldn’t stomach having spare rooms available and not offering them to those in need. Fire victims are currently staying for free at the luxurious inn … Continue reading
