The Lord of the Silent – Elizabeth Peters

As we continue the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters, our path leads us to “The Lord of the Silent.” World War I is still raging, making travel between England and Egypt more difficult. This, however, does not stop the Emersons from their yearly gallivant in the tombs. Emerson is as keen as ever to get on with his beloved occupation, and Amelia is no less excited to help him. However, a different type of danger lurks for Ramses. He served his country as a double agent in our last adventure, and there are those who know his true identity. … Continue reading

Discipling Young Hearts: Virtue

Virtue is defined as moral excellence. From virtue a princess’s character and actions will reflect Christ. It is where all over character traits and right actions hinge. Yet being virtuous is not always the easy choice and will at times take courage to set faith into action. God places virtue as more valuable than wealth. Worldly wealth is temporary and does not please God. A virtuous life is one that pleases the Lord and lives eternally. Virtue is not to be defined by the world but defined by moral excellence rooted in the Word of God. A virtuous heart makes … Continue reading

Physical Problems Brought On By Eating Disorders

The whole thing had started as a way to improve Christina’s looks. All it had done over the years was wear her body down. Her hair was thin and lifeless. Her face dry and flaccid. Her eyes, dull and rimmed with red. The skin on her upper arms drooped, robbed of muscle tone. Her body was an odd mix of thin limbs and stubborn stores of fat, seemingly as double-minded about itself as she was. She was tired all the time; tired of the constant battle with her body. At some point, her body had ceased to be her subservient … Continue reading

Allowing Children to Speak Up for Themselves

So this school year, as I have expressed in some of my blogs, I became a football mom. My youngest is the only real athletic child in our family and so this was a real treat for my husband and me. Or at least we thought it was going to be. Turns out this was going to be an experience full of challenges and lessons for not only my son but my husband and I. This is especially true for me as I learned to let go and allow my son to learn from his difficult experiences. Not only do … Continue reading

Celebrities and the Taxman – Part 2

The other day, I blogged about celebrities with current tax woes. But, what of those that fell out of the good graces of the IRS in the past? Spiro Agnew learned that being the Vice President of the U.S. wasn’t enough to ward off the IRS when they came looking for their money. In 1973, there was an investigation into Agnew’s tax payments or rather lack there of. Agnew, also under investigation for extortion, bribery, and conspiracy, pleaded guilty to one charge of failure to report income and resigned from the office. Boris Becker tried to get out of paying … Continue reading

Evaluating Your Stress Level

Life isn’t always smooth sailing. Periodic stress is a normal part of life! However, stress that goes on for a long time (chronic stress) should not be a normal part of life. Every person handles stress differently. What I find stressful and what you find stressful may be two very different scenarios! Perception is a big part of how stressed you feel. One person may look at all the things you do in a day and think they would be stressed — yet you aren’t. But because stress is so very personal, it may be hard to evaluate your stress … Continue reading

Yoga is Non-Competitive

It is nearly impossible to go to the gym without feeling an air of competition coming from fellow members, and perhaps yourself. Of course, we should not reprimand ourselves if we have a desire to accomplish more with our personal fitness. This edge of competition can be healthy and can help us drive ourselves to our goals. But, what happens when we let ourselves become consumed by competition with others, thereby sinking more on the side of comparing ourselves with people around us? The two, competition and comparison, eventually become synonymous. Strangely, yoga, which does not have any organization which … Continue reading

Stuck in Between–When We Have to Wait for Answers

There’s a strange and awful place that we sometimes have to go when we have a child with a developmental delay or chronic illness. It’s like a halfway point between two doorways: The “everything’s going to be alright” doorway, and the “my world and my child’s world is shattered” doorway. And we stand there, in limbo, waiting to see which one will open. The Agony of Waiting We find ourselves in this in-between place when we’re waiting for the doctor to call with results from our child’s blood test or biopsy. Or when we’re waiting to hear the psychiatrist’s analysis, … Continue reading

Banned from Saturday Night Live – Part III

Who would have thought so many people and musical acts had been banned from appearing again on Saturday Night Live, it would take up three blogs? But, the most notorious banned is still to come! Sinead O’Connor Few people who were watching the night of October 3, 1992 can forgot the image of Sinead O’Connor saying “Fight the real enemy!” while ripping a photo of Pope John Paul II in half. The “applause” cue was cut off and the audience just sat silent in amazement. NBC received many complaints about this episode within minutes. Host Tim Robbins was raised Catholic … Continue reading

Mirror, Mirror on the Wall: I Hate Myself

We’ve all been there, a half-glance that catches your own image in the corner of your eye as you look into a mirror and the negative self-talk begins. Your legs are too thick, your tummy isn’t flat enough and your arms are fat. Kids may be the worst when it comes to teasing and saying things, but women are the worst when it comes to judging themselves and being self-critical. Unfortunately, when it comes to judging ourselves – we’re harsh and we always compare ourselves (often unfavorably) to other women and find ourselves lacking. Imagine looking at yourself in comparison … Continue reading
