The Human Garbage Disposal

Did you get the lecture about the starving children in Africa when you were a child and didn’t want to eat the meal that was prepared for you? Perhaps you might have found yourself using the line when trying to get your own children to eat. Were you forced to sit and eat every last bite on your plate that your mother laboriously and lovingly slaved over? To this day I have the hardest time leaving a little something left on my plate. When eating out I feel I need to get my money’s worth out of the meal. I … Continue reading

Avoiding the Sugar Crash

I’m over Halloween candy. If I had my way I would pitch every last fun-size Snickers bar and gummy worm in the trash. Of course, doing so would likely send my kid into cardiac arrest, but the health issues associated with eating the six pounds of loot she gathered during her four-hour trick-or-treat marathon can’t be much better, so I am seriously considering trashing her treat-filled pillow case. Regardless of gender, race or creed, most parents agree that too much Halloween candy is never a good thing. Okay, perhaps this issue does not cross gender lines, as I know way … Continue reading

Dawn Does More than Dishes, Saves Wildlife Too

Today is Earth Day, so I thought I’d profile a company committed to helping keep the Earth and certain of its inhabitants clean: Dawn. (Yes, as in the dish soap.) I happened to be washing dishes the other day when I noticed a sticker on their bottle with a bird and the logo “Dawn Saves Wildlife” on it. There was also a web address listed, DawnSavesWildlife.com, so I decided to check it out. What I found is that they’ve launched a “Make a Difference” campaign to help the countless animals injured or killed by the millions of gallons of oil … Continue reading

21 Things I’ve Learned about My Christian Walk at the Gym

If you go to a gym, it might be fun to seek out a correlation of your faith and your workout. The following are some things I’ve come up with: 1. Doing the right thing might take some sacrifice but is worth it at the end of the day. 2. My Christian walk is like being on a moving treadmill; when I’m not walking forward, I’m back-sliding. 3. I don’t make it very far if I haven’t eaten a good meal or drank enough water. 4. Just when I don’t think I can take another step, I learn that I … Continue reading

Self-Control

Those pressing on toward their New Year’s Resolution goals likely have a good understanding about self-control. It’s something so many of us struggle with. It’s the inner battle between our flesh nature and our spirit nature. What inspired me to write is my deep craving for something sweet to eat right now! I am well aware that I need to drop more than a few pounds and I know too my body does not need more food in it—especially sweets! I know that I’m not going to starve if I sit here and resist the temptation to give in. I … Continue reading

How Fat Are You Really?

I made an interesting discovery while at the gym today. I met with a personal trainer (complimentary session) who discussed some goals with me, did some fitness testing, targeted areas of concern, matched them up with some other data from testing (weight, body fat tests…) and gave me a plan outline for me to follow on my journey to the healthier me. Over a week ago when I began my new life, I figured I had about one-hundred pounds to lose. I’d done simple on-line calculators that gave me a “healthy weight range” only to find out today, even at … Continue reading

Searching for the Real Me

I don’t feel like an overweight woman most of the time. Yeah, my back hurts and I’m tired a lot, but heck, kids can do that to you right? What I don’t get is why couldn’t I have a problem different than obesity instead? Why couldn’t I be too pretty or too charming? For some reason it seems more acceptable for a person’s eating disorder to manifest in being thin than overweight. My problem is, when I look in the mirror I don’t see a fat lady. I know I’m not thin, but I have just grown to accept that … Continue reading

Be Careful When Heating Up Thanksgiving Leftovers

Thanksgiving may be over, but you may not be able to tell by looking in your refrigerator. Even if the turkey, stuffing and cranberries were exceptionally prepared there’s usually enough to last long after the holiday meal is over. And, if you’re anything like me you probably don’t think twice about sticking those leftovers in the microwave and reheating them. If you do—-beware. Food experts say when heating up food in plastic, you might be consuming chemicals you never knew existed. Studies have shown that in some plastics, a chemical called DEHA can seep into your food when exposed to … Continue reading
