How to Have A Frugal Halloween

One of the most frightening things about Halloween is how much it can cost. Do you know, I saw a recent retail report that showed that American’s spend more money at Halloween than at any other time, with the exception of Christmas? This just strikes me as incredible. At the end of the celebration, what happens to all of those goods that are purchased? Do most people have anything to show for all of that spending? I get it. I mean Halloween can be a fun holiday. There is candy. Candy is probably a good enough reason (although there is … Continue reading

The Curse of the Halloween Candy

What is the scariest part of Halloween? It isn’t the horror movies or the things that go bump in the night (unless it is your tummy hitting the side of the bathroom door when you get up to pee). No, it is all of that Halloween candy. Our family isn’t really big on Halloween. We recognize that the younger kids seem to enjoy it, so we make a little bit of effort. They have costumes and go out trick or treating with friends, collecting candy. I bought two bags of candy this year. One was a bag of candy corn … Continue reading

How Much Would You Spend on a Moonbounce Birthday Party?

My seven-year-old daughter, or miss popular as we like to call her, has been invited to a number of fun birthday parties, everything from a hip hop dance party to a rock-climbing party. Her own birthday is coming up, and she wants a cupcake-moonbounce-girlie party for all of her friends, whatever that means. The moonbounce idea was actually her father’s, who thought renting a moonbounce might be fun for the kids. I agree that it would be, but unfortunately, since her birthday is in November (and we live in an area that has dramatic changes in seasons), it will be … Continue reading

How to Save on Pumpkins

This time of year, everyone wants pumpkins. I am embarrassed to say that one year we wound up spending $50 on pumpkins for decorating. That seems like a lot to me. Of course, a friend of mine thinks that is a bargain. She routinely spends about $200 on pumpkins, hay and other fall decorations for the outside of her home. I have other things that I would like to spend that money on, although we do like to have our pumpkins. So, if you feel the same way, you might want to read the following tips. They may help you … Continue reading

THAT Mom Strikes Again

Recent phone conversation with friend, who has a 3-year-old and a 3-month-old: Her: “Halloween is less than two weeks away and I still don’t have costumes for the kids!” Me: “Halloween is less than two weeks away? Wow! That means T’s had her costume for more two months now.” Her: Click The curse of being THAT mom; it comes with the territory. I wear my THAT mom badge proudly because to be quite honest, I have been where my friend is now with kids, no costumes, and Halloween right around the corner. And frankly, it sucks. By now stores are … Continue reading

Where Oh Where Has My Motivation Gone?

Isn’t it funny how when you get out of a habit it is so hard to get back into it? I’m pretty stalled this week. There have been a couple of issues, I mean excuses. First of all, my wonderful free elliptical may have just breathed its last. A part cracked on it, spilling white powder that is apparently pretty essential to the machine operating correctly. The part is no longer sold by the manufacturer, and my very talented husband has little hope of improvising a part to correct it. I may get a few more workouts out of it, … Continue reading
