Judging the Overweight

For those of you who have seen the movie, “Shallow Hal” you will understand what I am talking about. For those of you who have not seen this movie, it is a good pick to watch. The movie begins something like this. This bachelor is looking for the perfect girl, but his attempts are in vain. He chooses the girls who are a “10” in the looks category, but there is not much upstairs, if you know what I mean. He judges these women solely on their outward beauty. He is told by a motivational speaker while riding in an … Continue reading

Coming Out and Being Honest

I’ve spent the last 15 years underestimating a problem I have. Rather than confronting it, I believed ignoring it as in issue would make it go way. I struggle with obesity; I have an eating disorder. Unlike many other issues people struggle with, mine stands out obvious to anyone who sees me. It’s not that I’ve denied being overweight, it’s that I refused to make it an issue or define who I am. Instead I’ve tried to overcompensate, hoping to shine what’s inside me, that it might radiate and people wouldn’t notice my weight. I fear I’ve reached a point … Continue reading

Weight Loss: To Weigh or Not To Weigh

To weigh or not to weigh, that is the question. I know that every expert will tell you not to weigh yourself more than once a week. They will tell you not to be as concerned with your weight, but more so to be concerned with health and fitness. Personally, I cannot do that. Don’t get me wrong. I find that if I do not keep up with my latest statistics I will … Continue reading

New Year’s Resolution

It’s that time of year again where we make promises we often don’t keep in effort to improve ourselves (or others) in one way or another. Every year I think about what I’m going to challenge myself to accomplish. Some people decide to join a workout or weight loss program and others think about getting their finances in order. I know there are many who plan to read the whole Bible in a year as well. There are countless things to commit to doing or changing. This year I really hope will be different for most. I think the best … Continue reading

Fitness Material – Review

A Review of Fat Politics: The Real Story Behind America’s Obesity Epidemic Recently, I took a look at a book that caught my eye, mostly because the title really got to me. Anything that starts with “Fat Politics” gets my attention. As Lisa mentioned recently in the Overweight and Invisible post on the Weight Loss blog, there’s a lot of pre-judging that occurs with weight. This book is a good read, because it focuses on positives and negatives and not just the negative. Eric Oliver’s book opens with the line: This was not a book I intended to write. Since … Continue reading
