On the Weight Watchers Wagon...Again: A Bathing Suit in February

by Susan Ridgeway | More from this Blogger

I know what you are thinking: a bathing suit in February, are you crazy? This is the time of year when we are "legally" allowed to be covered in layers of clothes or bundled under the blanket in front of the fire. You technically don't have to show skin for quite some time. But it's true, I did it. I wore a bathing suit, in public, in the middle of February.

It was for my kids (the things we mothers do). A new indoor water park just opened up complete with slides and a lazy river. My perpetually skinny friend asked me if I wanted to take the kids there (she has twin girls who are the same age as my oldest) to check it out. She was contemplating having her daughters' birthday parties there and wanted us to test the waters as it were. I made the mistake of mentioning it to the kids so there was no turning back.

I reluctantly walked upstairs, dug through my drawers and found my black one piece (no way I was going to pull out the red bikini). Now, putting aside the shaving factor which was an event in and of itself, wearing the bathing suit wasn't as traumatic as I feared: I could actually go out in public and not scare small children or be completely humiliated.

But staring at myself in the mirror in the locker room at the aquatic center under the glaring and show-every-little-imperfection-flourescent lights, I came to the realization that summer is not that far off. And if I don't want to spend the whole summer once again trying to lose "those last few pounds" I better get serious now.

We may be shopping for Valentines today, but before you know it, it will be time to stock up on sunscreen. Don't believe me? Look at the calendar, Memorial Day is only about 100 days away.
