Mom Approved Cereal

Breakfast in my house equals a bowl of cereal on most days. It is not unusual to find a few of my kids eating cereal as a snack during the day as well. With all this cereal eating going on, I have to be sure I am feeding them quality cereal that is low in sugar and high in nutrition. I have searched the grocery store aisles for the most nutritious but still delicious cereal my kids will eat. One of my family favorites is Barbara’s Bakery’s Puffins cereal. Barbara’s Bakery was generous enough to allow me to review some … Continue reading

Holey Donuts: Too Good to be True

Holey Donuts is known for making low fat delicious donuts. The company has been featured in People Magazine, Everyday with Rachael Ray, The Diet Detectives, amongst others for their amazing donuts. These little donuts from Heaven contain no artificial sweeteners, no trans-fat and over 1/2 the amount of fat and calories than regular donuts. I was intrigued by the idea of a low fat donut but I didn’t have high hopes. I expected an artificial disappointing substitute for the real thing. The type of diet food you tolerate because it’s the closest thing to what you are craving. Even so, … Continue reading

Water Gets a Face Lift with Hint

I love to drink water. Nothing is more refreshing than a cold glass of water. However, my kids are not huge water fans. I allow juice and milk at meal times and water throughout the day. Many times I don’t even buy juice due to the amount of sugar it contains. Whole fruit is far better for a child than a glass of juice. Yet, my kids are always jazzing up their water either with a squeeze of lemon or lime. I understand how boring water can become. However, the options out there normally contain too many calories or sugar. … Continue reading

Childhood Obesity

It has been estimated that 1 out of 5 children is overweight. That is alarming. Childhood obesity is becoming the norm rather than the exception. As a mom of a child who is “at risk of being overweight”, I know how quickly this can happen and how diligent we need to be with portion control and what foods our children eat. My pediatrician told me on my child’s annual visit that he has the talk about childhood obesity at least five times or more a day. The Obesity Society says that childhood obesity is regarded as the most common prevalent … Continue reading

Are you a breakfast skipper?

We all have heard the breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Not being a breakfast person, I was hoping there was no truth to that. However, the statement is not your mom’s way of getting you to eat a healthy breakfast or making you get up earlier to get ready for school, it is pure truth. Eating breakfast helps maintain a healthy body weight and increases your metabolic rate. If you eat a healthy breakfast it will keep you from mindlessly snacking throughout the day. There’s no two ways about it what you eat for breakfast is … Continue reading

WIC

WIC stands for Women. Infant, Children and is a federally funded state run program for pregnant and breastfeeding women as well as children up to age five. The goal of WIC is to make sure that children have a nutritionally sound start in life and women have healthy pregnancies. I’m a foster parent so I’ve been in the WIC program with each foster child. WIC has supplied my children with regular or sensitive formula for the first year. If I need a formula other than the ones my WIC office provides, I can get a prescription from my pediatrician that … Continue reading

What’s in your child’s lunchbox?

The biggest influence on how our children eat is you, the parent. That influence does not end with a packed lunch. We still need to be vigilant to provide healthy options even when processed, sugary, prepackaged foods are so much easier to pack. The 100 calorie cookie packs look to be a nice idea but they are loaded with sugar. Peanut butter and jelly is always a hit but jelly is packed with high fructose sugar. What kid doesn’t love the crunch of a bag of potato chips? Yet, chips contain high amounts of fat. How about a nice turkey … Continue reading
