Losing Weight with Potatoes?

I once went on a potato diet. Now, you would not think that this was such a good idea because many people seem to feel that potatoes are very fattening. Did you know that a medium baked potato contains only about 160 calories? A medium baked potato is considered to be approximately 3 inches in width so that is a pretty good-sized potato. If the thought of eating a potato without any toppings or additives on it puts a lump in your throat, rest easy. You can also put 2 tablespoons of low-fat sour cream on top of it and … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Best Week Ever!

This has been the best week for me! I finally, after months away, found my way back to the gym. On three consecutive afternoons, from Wednesday to Friday, I worked out for a full hour. I walked briskly and slightly uphill for about half of that time on the treadmill and then spent the remaining time using individual resistance machines for my abs, arms, thighs, legs and other long-neglected muscles. Needless to say, I feel extremely tired. I have not quite arrived at the point where a workout gives off energy but I feel great about myself and hope that … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: The best 8lbs I’ve ever gained

My new baby girl was born on Memorial Day. She greeted us at 1:08 am and weighed a healthy 8 lbs, 5 ounces. The routine on the home front has been as normal as something brand new can possibly be. I have been cooking well-rounded, full meals as I expected I would during my week off from work. As a result, my little family has been on a culinary tour of the globe over the last three days. On Thursday we enjoyed a taste of Mexico as I served up free-range chicken fajitas, yellow rice and tortilla chips. On Friday … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Bangers & Mash

Last night, I cooked a some traditional Banger pork sausage on the grill while indoors four large Russet Potatoes enjoyed a stovetop Jacuzzi. To the potatoes, I added a bit of light sour cream, a pat or two of salted butter and a lot of finely chopped chives from my herb garden. It marks the first time I have prepared this customary British meal for my family. I had a plate of Bangers & Mash while in London four years ago and loved it – last night I finally got around to making it at home. It is a delicious, … Continue reading

Losing Weight Means Finding Out What Works For You

Have you heard the weight loss story of Roger Troy Wilson, the author of the book Let’s Do Lunch? He went from 425 pounds and a 60 inch waist to 195 pounds and a 36 inch waist after devising his own weight loss plan. He claims that he developed his weight loss regimen through trial and error. Succumb to cravings, if you must, but choose … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Wishing for Spring

I am officially tired of the winter weather. I have dreams of shooting hoops in my driveway (without wearing mittens and ice skates) and spending entire afternoons in the backyard with my girls – running around like crazy people, tossing a Frisbee, playing catch and kicking a soccer ball. Spring is such a healthy-feeling period of time for me as I crack open the windows, letting the fresh air blow in – fumigating the house from all the wintertime illnesses and related germs that have been trapped inside for months. That big ball of heat in the sky gets a … Continue reading

Dad’s Losing It: Back on Schedule

Okay, now we are cooking with gas! My back feels pretty darn good and as a result I was able to hit the gym twice at the tail end of this snowy week, once for mere 27 minute walk on the treadmill. The second trip allowed for more time, and I completed a 40 minute total body workout which saw me walk for 22 minutes and proceed to work on the ab crunch, rowing, hip abductor and adductor, and the overhead pull down machines. Soundtracks were the new, yet to be released Bright Eyes “Four Winds” EP (exactly 27 minutes … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: Is Anyone Losing Weight Now?

I’m curious—who out there is losing weight right now? Who is resisting the temptations of holiday goodies? Who is opting for spiced tea rather than a peppermint mocha with whipped cream? I want to hear from you! I’m still on my cookie strike…mostly. I did eat one today, but that was because I created a recipe (check it out on the food blog) for Honey Granola Cookies With Apricots and I had to try one. But that’s all I tried. Just one. I did not continually make my way back to the kitchen, daring my will power to take over. … Continue reading

Beyonce Warns Against the Maple Syrup Diet

“I’m very conscious of being a curvy woman and I’m very happy that I am a curvy woman. I would never recommend it to anyone unless you are doing a movie and it’s necessary, and you have proper help” Beyonce said. ”As soon as it was over, I gained the weight back.” Beyonce added. Celebrities are known to go to extremes to fit a role. Beyonce lost 20 pounds in a short amount of time for a movie role. Christian Bale lost over 60 pounds for his role in The Machinist. Robert De Niro gained 60 pounds for Raging Bull. … Continue reading

What’s Your Type?

Have you ever considered that your blood type could affect how your digest food? I know I certainly had not given that any thought. However, a good friend of mine said she learned of a diet that claimed your diet is determined by your blood type. Maybe some of you have heard of this diet already; the Blood Type Diet. Normally, I dismiss talk about diets. We all have heard that diets don’t work. I believe that a diet only works as long as the novelty still presents itself to the dieter. Once the novelty wears off or the dieter … Continue reading
