Ways To Food Journal

Keeping a food journal is something you might want to do for different reasons. Some people want to keep a close watch on how many calories, fat, or carbohydrates they are consuming. Others might want to just see in list form all the food they are eating. Whatever your reason might be, keeping a food journal can be a key tool in your quest to be healthy and fit. Lately I have been keeping a food journal and have reflected on the various ways to keep one. I have tried to do this several times in the past, and it … Continue reading

Food and Allergies- A Solution

For years we’ve been hearing the benefits of honey. When I was a child, my mother used honey and lemon juice for sore throats. Honey for many people is a great addition to a recipe and can be substituted for sugar. But some of us are allergic to honey. In my case it causes tinnitus. Sounds bizarre but I have proved it over time to be true. Tinnitus is that constant ringing noise in your ears. In my case it sounded like I had a steam train in my head. It gets worse when it is quiet and makes it … Continue reading

Ask a Pets Blogger: Helping Pets with Flaky Skin

My cat has terrible dandruff… at least I think it’s dandruff! She’s always got flakes on her skin and in her coat. What can I do to clear this up? This is a conversation I get to have often at the cats-only boarding facility where I work. As part of our check-in process, we give each cat a quick brushing with a very fine-toothed comb. Our goal is to check for fleas, but we often end up talking to owners about skin and coat care… and dandruff. Dry skin can be a seasonal problem, especially in the winter months when … Continue reading

Keeping a Workout Journal

When I first started a workout routine that included weightlifting and running (nearly 20 years ago) I kept a journal to keep track of what exercises I was supposed to do on a particular day. After a while my routine became second nature and I stopped journaling. Recently, though, I’ve been hearing more and more trainers recommend that athletes continue keeping a workout diary regardless of whether or not they have memorized a set routine. The reason: Keeping a journal helps you recognize improvements. For example, if you started a training program that includes running you would track the number … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Two Happy Endings for the Price of One

At the beginning of the summer, someone called the cats-only boarding facility hoping to find her lost cat. She was staying at a nearby hotel and the cat had slipped out when someone had come to the door. (It’s all too easy for this to happen, as I learned when I was on my cross-country trip with Moose and Lally!) We promised to keep an eye out for her cat — a grey kitty with big blue eyes. Since we leave food out for the local feral cats, we often get other wanderers stopping by for a nibble. But months … Continue reading

Diary of a Cat Care B&B: Cleanliness

Cleaning, cleaning, and more cleaning. The bulk of my hours at the cat boarding facility are taken up with cleaning. The first thing I do in the morning is empty the litter pans. Each guest room has a separate, private area for the litter pan. Spray the nook down with a cleaning solution, wipe it clean, and put in a fresh pan and fresh litter. After all the litter pans have been emptied, I take the garbage out. A bag full of last night’s litter and waste can be pretty heavy! Then I sweep the whole room to gather up … Continue reading

Keeping a Food Diary

Yes, we’ve all heard it before. “Write down everything you eat.” Problem is, if you’re like me, you can’t bear to see yourself write something that goes like this: Breakfast: 1/2 Entenmann’s Raspberry Danish Twist, 4 cups of coffee Lunch: Whopper, small fries, small Diet Coke Dinner: 3 Slices Stuffed Crust Super Supreme Pizza We all have these days. We end up paying for them because we usually always feel like poo the next day from all the extra fat, sugar and guilt. This is why many of us don’t bother with the food diary but it is the very … Continue reading

Engineering Your Junk Food for Your Diet

I love the King. No, not Elvis, the Burger King. I love his Turbo coffee and I love his flame broiled burgers but, most of all I love his sausage, egg and cheese biscuits. Breakfast with the King is my downfall. The sausage, egg and cheese biscuit at burger king has 37 grams of carbohydrates and only 15 grams of protein while packing a whopping 40 grams of fat! For somebody like me who is very sensitive to starchy carbohydrates (just looking at a baked good makes me retain water) keeping a proper balance between carbohydrates and protein is very … Continue reading
