The Incredible Edible Egg and Pregnancy

Pregnancy is a time in a woman’s life that demands protein. Without sufficient protein, the baby cannot grow properly and well. Babies are basically “built” out of protein. As such pregnant women are encouraged to eat anywhere from eighty to one hundred and ten grams of protein every single day. Eating so much protein may seem like and impossible feat, but there exists a very compact protein and nutrient packed food that can help meet the protein needs of almost all pregnant women. This amazing protein source is the incredible edible egg. Perfectly packaged in an ellipsoid shape, the single … Continue reading

Tackling Furniture Stains

How did your furniture fare during your Thanksgiving get-together? If your sofa saw more stuffing stains than your tablecloth, then you are likely in need of some serious cleaning solutions. Fortunately, there are a number of reputable commercial cleaning products on the market today that allow furniture owners to tackle stain-busting on their own without having to call in the experts. It’s Two O’Clock, Do You Know Where Your Energy Went?

You know the feeling. It is a while after lunch and you are sitting at your desk, working. All of a sudden, you realize that you are tired. Not just a little tired, either. The kind of tired where all that you can do is think about how tired you are, and how much you would like to go to sleep right then and there. You are experiencing the afternoon slump, and you are not alone. What causes the afternoon slump? Afternoon tiredness is a natural part of our circadian rhythms, those daily cycles that are biologically hard-wired into our … Continue reading

Pet Obesity

We hear a lot about human obesity, but what about pet obesity? For me it’s a lot simpler to keep my dog in shape by not feeding her too much than to keep myself in shape and ignore that extra slice of cake. Pet obesity, however, is on the rise in America. MSNBC has the details on a 2009 veterinarian survey revealing that 45% of dogs and 58% of cats nationwide are overweight. I’m definitely surprised by these numbers; I expected lower for dogs. I think it’s easier to make sure my dog gets enough exercise than figuring out how … Continue reading

Confessions of a Foodie Mom, Week Three

I’m down a pound this week! (For a few days I was worried that I wouldn’t have any weight loss to report!) It’s been a weird couple of weeks—I’ve been in a lot of pain so I haven’t been cooking much, and exercising has been harder. Two things which have made it easier are: exercise, no matter how little, and keeping the fridge stocked with hard-boiled eggs, lots of fruits, and low-fat string cheese. I also like to stock V-8 Juice so I can get some veggie servings even when we run out of salad fixings and baby carrots. In … Continue reading

Myth: Your Baby Will Sleep Longer If You Feed Her Solids

If your baby has been having a hard time sleeping through the night, you’ve probably had more than one well-meaning person tell you to add cereal to your baby’s bottle or start solids. “Think about it, it’s hard to sleep if you’re hungry,” they’ll say. There are several problems with this myth however. First of all, there is no evidence that solids increase a baby’s total sleep. They may fall asleep a little quicker if they are stuffed, but babies wake up for many reasons which have more to do with their biological clocks than their tummies. The circadian rhythms … Continue reading

Are Children Adopted from China at Risk from Tainted Milk?

You’ve probably heard about the scandal of melamine being added to pet food, milk and formula, and a few other items manufactured in China. Some adoptive parents have found kidney stones or other renal problems in their children adopted from China. Should more parents with children from China be worried? Melamine is a chemical found in various cleaners and plastics, among other things. (You can find a blog describing symptoms in our Pets blog by clicking here. Like in animals, the primary worry about too much melamine exposure for children is urinary tract problems, including kidney stones and kidney failure. … Continue reading

Getting More Protein Without the Cholesterol

“I read your blogs about protein and how much I should eat. I have a problem with your advice though. How can we keep our protein levels high while keeping our cholesterol low?” A diet high in protein does not necessitate a diet high in fat or cholesterol. Following are some low-cholesterol options to add more protein to your diet: Egg whites: If you can’t stand the flavor of plain egg whites, mix in one egg yolk with them. It’ll make for good flavor and texture while keeping cholesterol low. Lean meats: Beef and pork tenderloin are low in fat … Continue reading

Is There Such a Thing as Too Much Protein?

“I eat eggs, toast and a protein shake for breakfast. Is that too much?” The answer really depends upon how many eggs and what kind of toast and protein shake you’re eating for breakfast. Let’s start with how much protein is too much. The human body can only assimilate 50 grams of protein in one sitting. If you eat any more than that, it will not be assimilated by your body and will just get flushed. That’s why it is usually recommended that one has 20-30 grams of protein per meal for 3-6 meals per day as well as 10-20 … Continue reading

Treating Your Dog’s Diarrhea

Once upon a time Aimee wrote an article about her adventures with POOPAPALOOZA 2006. (Which is pretty darn amusing by the way. Gross, but amusing.) At any rate, I was reminded of that article when Murph had major tummy troubles recently. Thankfully Murph did not follow Moose’s lead and leave any “Lake Poop-eriors” anywhere. He’s pretty good about pestering us mercilessly to let him out if we’re around to pester. Which is good, because he was dealing with some pretty nasty, messy, runny poop. And a lot of it. I ended up taking him to the vet because the things … Continue reading
