I'm Not Pregnant, I'm Fatby Melissa J | More from this Blogger 10 Jan 2007 02:50 AM I assume when people see me they can tell I'm overweight. For this reason it blows me away when I get questioned about being pregnant. Do I really look pregnant? Can't people tell the difference? I remember when I was very young I was at my grandma's home. Her neighbor who was very heavy had just left for her house. I asked my grandma if the lady was pregnant. I remember her telling me she was so glad I asked then and not while the lady was standing there. She explained the lady was overweight and we should never ask someone if they're pregnant in case they're not. For this reason it floors me that people will have the audacity to ask such a question. I was at a discount store with my good friend who was around six or seven months pregnant. She is a thin build but had a nice, cute round tummy. She and I placed our purchases for her unborn son on the counter, and the sales man asked me when I was due! Coldly, I told him I was not pregnant and he covered his mouth and laughed in nervous embarrassment. My friend, being the good friend she is assured me, with disgust for the man's boldness, that I didn't look pregnant. The reality is, I hold weight around my belly and too many people think it looks otherwise. My husband and I adopted our children. We started the adoption path prior to our fertility investigation. As a result of some inconclusive testing, I believed it was likely my body that was infertile. Just months before our first son was placed, curiosity got the better of my husband so he went in for testing and found out he was sterile. This made the pregnancy comments that much more annoying and a bit hurtful. While we were waiting for our adoptive placement, I fantasized a conversation in my mind where a person asks me when I'm due. Instead of telling them I'm not pregnant, I tell them, "I'm really not sure. We've been waiting for our baby four years now. We're praying they come soon!" I feel your pain. lol. I do mystery shops for a maternity store. Pretty sad that I've never been pegged as a phony. ;-) I think people are probably just trying to start conversation. But on a more serious note, if your weight is all around your belly (mine is), you ought to get tested for diabetes. If for no other reason than to head it off. Andrea Hermitt (5507) 10 Jan 2007 07:09 AMI was coming out of a restaurant last week holding my full tummy. A man touched my tummy too and asked me if the food was good.... I said... yeah, and I'm not pregnant! He said he knew... Wierd... my husband and kids were freaked out... I normally only see people touching pregnant tummies which I did not allow! Melissa J (13710) 10 Jan 2007 09:04 AMAndrea, I can't believe someone would feel so bold as to think it was okay to touch the tummy of a lady they didn't know! Julie, I've started (not a diet--even if it was, I couldn't call it that or I'd give up to easily) a new plan I can live with. I cut out sugar from my diet--not entirely since sugar seems to be in many things, have been drinking my green tea, I'm begining to work out regularly at the gym and make subtle changes in my eating that I can live with forever. I was tested recently for diabetes and didn't have it but certainly did NOT want it going in that direction. Even after several days now, I am actually sleeping better. Hoping to see more changes soon :). mama2riley (24481) 10 Jan 2007 11:15 AMOMG Andrea I can't believe he did that! It reminds me of the commercial for ivillage where the pregnant lady is in the grocery store and man, complete stranger, comes up and rubs her belly and is saying how huge she is. Some people just don't think before they say and do things I guess. I was at dinner with a bunch of friends last year and our waitress asked one of my friends when her baby was due....we all looked at her like WHAT BABY?! No she was not pregnant, nor was she even too overweight, just had a little roll around the middle like so many of us do. Needless to say it was quite embarrassing. Lashell Hoover (470) 10 Jan 2007 11:26 AMMy weight is around my middle and upper thighs. I sometimes shop in maternity stores because the tops flatter my shape. Plus, I like the lotions they carry...the ones for stretch marks. Julie Gentry (5915) 10 Jan 2007 11:42 AMMe, to, Lashell (about the lotions). I also buy the stretchmark sticks to use when I get cracked feet. Expensive remedy, but the mystery shop company is paying anyway ;-). Catherine Ipcizade (5617) 10 Jan 2007 12:35 PMThis post resonated strongly with me--I'm sorry that has happened to you. I've oftened wished I was a pear shape instead of an apple shape so that I didn't carry so much weight around my middle. Grammi58 (396) 13 Jan 2007 02:06 PMTwenty nine years ago, after my 1st child was born(she was around 10-14 days olds), I was in line at a grocery store. The clerk asked me when I was due. I felt very embarressed. I informed him that I just had a baby. I think he was more embarressed thatn I was. It's best to just keep your thoughts & comments to yourself if you're not sure of the stituation. Community Tags belly fat, infertility, pregnant, waist line Discuss this article
