I Know Why the Grilled Cheese Sings

I think I have entered some kind of self preservation mode or something. Looking back at a week where I was not consciously trying to lose weight (more like just trying to survive the week) I can see some balance, although mostly unwittingly done. When a busy church and home schedule prevented me from eating any lunch, I didn’t automatically reach for nonsense calories as soon as I got home. At the same time, I just shrugged my shoulders when my husband told me that he still couldn’t the elliptical fixed. Having stayed up late to work, I didn’t get … Continue reading

Too Good to Be True?

Most frugal advice should be practical and the strategies should be easy to implement. Everyday practices have to make sense, and actually save you money. Sometimes the advice is well-meaning but too good to be true for all but the most hard core savers. Here are a few of my choices for frugal advice, that while good, may also be too good to be true. Advice: Taking your crockpot on vacation. If you pack your crockpot with you on vacation, you can use this appliance to craft hearty, inexpensive meals and save on the high cost of eating out. What is Your Frugal Set Point?

I remember during the diet craze of the 90s, people talked a lot about the set point. The set point was the minimum number of calories (and exercise) that your body would except before it started losing weight. We all get used to a certain way of spending and living, and tend to increase that spending when we have additional income. So, the extra money gets swallowed … Continue reading

Eat Cookies and Lose Weight

There are so many diets out there or diet products that have you eat only one type of thing to loose weight. For example, if you eat specially formulated shakes, bars or cookies, you’ll lose weight. Is this true? Well probably. But, that doesn’t mean that you will be fitter, healthier or actually keep the weight off. Back about 10 years ago, I inadvertently lost weight by eating mostly junk food. I was working practically around the clock on a big project and didn’t have time for regular meals. I made sure that I got some workouts in, but honestly … Continue reading

Adapting My Clothing

Since I have been losing weight, I have had to contend with clothing not fitting me quite right. Believe me, I am not complaining. I’d rather have loose clothing than tight clothing. But because of my limited wardrobe (yes, I am the mom who still has clothing she purchased 10 years ago), I’ve been having to adapt. Why don’t I just get new clothing? Well, for one thing, I am very frugal (notice the clothing from 10 years ago). We just don’t have a new wardrobe in the budget at the moment, especially with the holidays here. The other reason, … Continue reading
