Why Cats Do Weird Things: Pawing Around Water

We know why cats play with their water: they paw it and lick it from their paws, to try to make their water ripple and thus seem fresher.  Cats love fresh water.  But I’ve noticed Cole sometimes do something a bit stranger than that: he paws around his water bowl.  He doesn’t actually dip his paws in, but he scratches at the floor around the water bowl.  Why is he doing that? There isn’t a clear answer as to why; a lot of cat behavior is mysterious to us.  But there are a few educated guesses out there.  The first is … Continue reading

How to Water Your Plants During a Drought

Water, water. Sometimes it’s not everywhere. Sometimes there is no rain to be found, not for days and weeks. This is scary for farmers and deeply frustrating for gardeners. In a drought, plants die, and if you rely on these plants for food and shade, this can be very difficult. How can you weather drought and plan for future dry times as well? Let some of your plants go dormant. Lawns and moss will go brown. This is fine. Keep your lawn a little longer before the dry season begins so that it will make as much shade and conserve … Continue reading

Does Your Toddler Drink Too Much Juice?

I have yet to meet a toddler who does not like juice. Juice tastes sweet and it is refreshing when one is thirsty from playing hard. Toddlers often ask for juice, and many parents are happy to provide it. After all it’s juice, and juice comes from fruit, right? It turns out that juice is not as great of a beverage option for your toddler as many of us thought. Many drinks that are labeled as juice contain added sugar and artificial coloring, and those are not good things for toddlers to be consuming. While a cup of diluted, 100 … Continue reading

Water Baby

Water can be a calming force of nature. Water is the source of origin for continued life. Without water we cannot survive. Aside from the first parents, all human beings begins life’s journey through water. My daughter was no different, she spent the first nine months of her in utero life in warm life sustaining and protecting water. She knows the security of water as much as she knows security in my arms. With this understanding of the importance of water to my daughter’s life and my own pain-relieving comfort from water, I chose to birth my daughter in a … Continue reading

You Just Need a Little Water

I often find myself looking at others around me and thinking, “Wow, their life is so great. They’re happily married, they’ve got great kids who are always so obedient, and their house is always clean! I wish my life was more like that.” We’ve all been there; the grass is always greener mentality. We compare our lives to those around us, without really knowing what goes on behind closed doors. We sit and mope about how we wish our life was so much better, but then we forget to do something about it. Did you remember to water the lawn … Continue reading

Cleaning Hard Water Stains

I’m always amazed that no matter how much I clean my house, there is always something to be done. It seems like every day I’m picking up, dusting and vacuuming. Sometimes I forget the other things, you know, those things that have to be done once in a while. It seems like today was that once in a while. I woke up in a cleaning mood, when that happens I know I’m going to be doing things I don’t usually do. This was not to be a normal cleaning day. I live in Utah and we have extremely hard water. … Continue reading

Too Much Phosphorus Can Make You Itch

Let me start today by saying again how proud I am of my husband and his adjusting to the new diet that I am being very guarded with. I may be driving him crazy he has not said anything but if my driving him a little crazy keeps him off dialysis for a little while longer than I am ok with that. I have a friend who is a non-insulin dependent diabetic she controls hers through her food choices. She is always complaining that she is itchy but says that her sugar has been good so she does not know … Continue reading

Runners Collapse in Race Due to Lack of Water

This past week the city I live in, Milwaukee, hosted its “Rock ‘n Sole” event, a half marathon and 10K race that is sponsored by the largest musical festival around, “Summerfest.” The temperature was 85 degrees and the humidity was high. But runners are used to this and so they manage to get through it. That is, if they remain hydrated. What was supposed to be a day of fun and fitness turned into medical emergencies as more than 20 runners had to be taken to a hospital. All required IVs for hydration. There was an additional 50 runners who … Continue reading

My Perfect Water Bottle

I am an advocate for drinking water and lots of it! Whether it is for your workout or just regular day routine, you need to be hydrating. I also try to be green and tend to steer away from using individual, non-reusable bottles. I am always trying to drink 8 glasses a day which would be about 8 individual bottles! Instead I have decided to fill up a reusable water bottle for my daily activities and workouts. Finding a perfect water bottle has been a long, grueling process. I find one that looks alright, buy it because how else can … Continue reading
