Hot Weather Exercising Essentials

Hooray! The warm weather is finally here! The warm weather means outdoor fun. No more staying cooped up in the house. The warm weather also makes it more difficult to exercise outdoors. It takes more energy in the summer to exercise outdoors and we tire more easily.

Here are some simple steps to take to keep cool while exercising outdoors in the heat.

1. First of all, do not try to look glamorous. This is the last thing that you need to worry about right now. Wear the lightest, loosest, most breathable fabric that you can wear. Try to wear white. You can still look cute in a pair of loose white shorts and sleeveless top. Make sure that you put on that sports bra too. You do not need to be uncomfortable, especially if you are a runner. 2. Drink, drink, drink! Water. Water is so great for us. It hydrates, refreshes, and quenches our thirst. Try to aim for 64-ounces of water each day. It is so good to flush out our bodies. We need to put back the water that we lose through sweating during exercise. 3. Try to exercise either in the early morning, or late evening. If you are able to, bring a buddy. Safety is important. If you are unable to exercise at those times, then exercise either before 10 a.m. or after 3 p.m. when the sun is the strongest. 4. You should wear something on your head, like a cap or a scarf. I know that many people hate doing this, but you should protect your head from the sun if you can. 5. Protect your eyes with sunglasses. People tend to forget about their eyes during the summer. Shielding your eyes from the sun is quite important. It is more comfortable too. 6. You should always wear sunscreen during the summer months, even on overcast days. There are so many cases of skin cancer each year and it seems to be on the rise. Take the extra few minutes and apply sunscreen before heading out the door. 7. Purchase a good pair of athletic sneakers. Feet are so abused and the sad thing is that people do not suffer the consequences of this until later on in life. It is too late then. Protect your feet now while you are younger. 8. You will tire more easily in the summer heat. You need to stop and take frequent breaks. Give your body a chance to recuperate before continuing your exercise.
