How much should a child exercise?

Have you ever wanted to bottle up a child’s energy? You can always find a kid moving and playing actively, right? I have four kids and three of the four never stop moving. Wait! Yes, they will stop moving when there is a screen in front of their face. It could be a TV screen or a computer screen but if they can see it they are in a seated position and time will be lost. So even the most active children can have moments of lazy times in front of the TV or playing a video game. This becomes … Continue reading

Burning Calories at Your Desk

While most of us pack on the calories while working at our desks (the occasional cookie, donut, or an entire BLT sandwich) there are some companies that are actually helping employees burn calories while on the job. A few weeks back I saw a report on ABC News about a Minneapolis law firm that has done away with traditional oak wood desk and leather chair combos and replaced them with treadmills and raised computer stands so employees can type and workout without leaving their cubicles. The report also profiled a guy from Illinois who has adopted the same concept in … Continue reading

I also know that the term “dead beat”—usually pertaining to dads, but it doesn’t always have to be—has become entrenched in our popular culture and the language we use when we talk about divorce and single parenting issues. But, do we really want to use the term “dead beat” in front of our child to describe his or her other parent? It’s hard! I know this first hand and even if we understand that we shouldn’t be saying anything negative about our … Continue reading

Should Your Child’s Body Mass Index (BMI) Be Included On Their Report Card?

Should your child’s Body Mass Index (BMI) be included on their report card? According to the current issue of Redbook, several states have elected to include BMI’s on students’ report card in an effort to fight the rising childhood obesity epidemic. Your BMI is the ratio of weight to height and is used to determine a person’s healthy weight. I’m usually pretty much for or against an issue like this but I have to say this is one time I’m sort of riding the fence. I can understand both sides of the issue and could be persuaded to go either … Continue reading

Helping the Overweight Teenager

Between peers, teachers, neighbors, and the media, teenagers have enough information about weight shoved in their face. Being a parent of an overweight teenager is difficult only because you want your child to be healthy number one, but also liked. As you see your child come home from school in tears because he/she was teased, or you hear a story about your child not being included in a neighborhood game because of being too fat, or perhaps your child is obsessed with thin people in magazines on and television, it breaks your heart. Rather than just sit back and do … Continue reading

Lose Weight for Just Pennies a Day

I remember when I was growing up, there were always ads on television about the Children’s Fund and other charity organizations that urged individuals to sign up for their programs and bring food and water to children for just pennies a day. For the cost of a cup of coffee, you could bring food and water daily to children in countries in other parts of the world. The following suggestion, has likely been tried somewhere, though I’ve not seen it yet. My suggestion is to lose weight by not focusing on feeding yourself less, but by focusing on feeding others … Continue reading
