The Spending Diet Game Plan

Lose the extra weight from your budget by putting your spending habits on a diet. At the end of the month, you’ll have extra money that you can use to pay off some outstanding debt, and your budget will be slim and trim. Keep it up for six months or more, and your budget will be healthier than it has ever been. When you diet to lose weight, you must burn more calories than you take in if you want to be successful. A spending diet is similar, although in this case, you must take in more money than you … Continue reading

Gluten-Free at the Grocery Store

Have you ever gone grocery shopping for gluten-free food before? There is a bit of a “learning curve” involved in doing this successfully. It helps if you learn about what kinds of foods are gluten-free before you ever step foot into the grocery store. After that, it is just a matter of knowing where to look. If you have to stay on a gluten-free diet, then the produce section of the grocery store is about to become your new best friend. Fruits and veggies are naturally gluten-free. This is because gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, and … Continue reading

Atkins Diet – End of the First Week

Making it through the first week on the Atkins diet is something to feel good about. This new way of eating started to feel normal by the last few days of the first week. Things were getting easier, and I had some accomplishments that I was proud of. Two of the beverages that a person is allowed to drink while doing the Induction Phase of the Atkins diet are water and tea. Before starting this diet, I was drinking one or two sodas each day. Within the first week of Atkins I had already gotten used to drinking a whole … Continue reading

Atkins Diet – Days Two and Three

After a successful first day on the Atkins diet, I was inspired to continue. There is a bit of a learning curve with this diet, and it takes some creativity in order to manage to stay under 20 carbs each day. I was looking forward to the challenge of the second and third days on Atkins. My first day on Atkins went pretty well. By the end of the first day, I had only eaten 12 carbs, (out of the 20 I am allowed). I found myself thinking a lot about what I was going to eat next, and looking … Continue reading

Grocery Shopping When You First Start Atkins

One of the first things I learned about the Atkins diet was that it was going to require me to make drastic changes to how I was currently eating. I decided that the best thing to do would be to do some research about what I could eat, and how much I would need of those foods, before heading to the grocery store. Being organized made things a whole lot easier. A unique thing about the Atkins diet is that you need to count carbs instead of calories. This was new to me. Previous to starting this diet I was … Continue reading

Has Your Diet Fallen on its Face?

So what did it? Was it a cupcake with whipped frosting? Was it an extra serving of pasta? Was it that grande cup of full fat latte with real whipped cream and chocolate drizzle? Tell me what caused your diet to fall on its face. Maybe it wasn’t the food that tempted you but stress, feelings of low self esteem, or the decision to celebrate with too many calories. There are a million reasons from not being able to say no to dessert to a death in the family that can cause you to go off of your diet. There … Continue reading

Grocery Shopping on a Diet

Resolving to eat more naturally and healthier has made grocery shopping a unique experience. I have a keen eye for items that are either unhealthy due to added chemicals or amount of sugar or fat. Blindly picking up an item that looks yummy or easy to make are no longer how I make food choices. While, I never ate terribly I was no stranger to processed foods or the occasional fatty or sugary snack. I find giving up certain foods is both freeing and confining. It feels free to avoid aisles of junk food or processed foods. I am free … Continue reading

Bad Licorice and Smart Shopping

A pregnant woman’s diet is under such scrutiny. Doctors and scientists are always studying how different foods affect the health of a pregnant woman and her child. Often times, the focus is on what we cannot eat rather than what we should eat. We are constantly bombarded with warnings and new lists of foods to avoid. Unfortunately, you can add licorice to the list of things you can’t have (or should avoid) during pregnancy. Black licorice contains glycyrrhizin, which affects how hormones are regulated in the body. When a pregnant woman eats too much licorice, it can lead to higher … Continue reading

How to Afford a Healthy Diet

Dieting right isn’t easy when you’re on a tight budget. Unless you are a full time gardener and have your own greenhouse, fresh fruits and vegetables cost money and shopping for them takes time. Let’s not forget the difference in prices between healthy whole grain breads and pastas and those made from refined white flour. If you’ve done any comparison shopping lately, you know that healthy doesn’t come cheap. According to the Center for Disease Control, two-thirds of Americans are either overweight or obese. Consider also that American schools are seeing a growing trend in obese students and you’ll soon … Continue reading

Why You Need a List at the Grocery Store

Going into the grocery store without a list is as bad as going into the grocery store hungry, as far as I’m concerned. When you go into the grocery store and shop while you’re hungry, you’ll pick up anything in site. Suddenly everything looks appetizing—especially the “bad” foods that tempt us like magnets when we least expect it. When you go to the grocery store without a list, you may not be starving and wanting to pick up everything in sight, but you’re likely going to walk around the store aimlessly, forgetting your mental list. And when that happens, you … Continue reading
