Eating Disorders Run in Families

Genealogists are aware that certain genetically heritable diseases can be handed down through the family, from one generation to the next. Learned behaviors can also be passed along. Researchers have found that eating disorders can be passed from mothers to their daughters. Genealogists who are working on putting together a medical family tree have probably asked their relatives a whole lot of health questions. It might not be so difficult for your relatives to talk about health issues like high blood pressure, diabetes, or the type of cancer that caused the death of certain ancestors. However, there are a lot … Continue reading

Staying Healthy During the Holidays

Tis the season, for coughing, sneezing, runny noses, tummy aches and any other kind of germ your kids can drag home. It’s no fun to be sick for the holidays but in my house it seems like someone always is. Maybe it’s because we are spending more time in crowded shopping centers and malls, maybe it’s because we are exposed to more germs at all the holiday parties we attend or maybe germs just like us better during the holidays. Whatever the reason, we need to do what we can to fend off illness so everyone can enjoy the holidays. … Continue reading

Do You Support Your Spouse’s Healthy Habits?

I’ve mentioned before that my husband is the health nut and I’m the sugar addict. Lately, I’ve made major changes to my lifestyle and am no longer eating sugar. I’ve lost fifty pounds. How great is that? Because my husband understands how important it is to be healthy, he’s supported me all along the way and has never once sabotaged what I’m doing—we’re doing it together. But you know what, I’ve had friends tell me, “I’m trying to lose weight, but my husband eats junk food in front of me all the time.” Or, “My husband laughs when I tell … Continue reading

Tips For Eating Well For Less

I like to browse Oprah Winfrey’s web site for many reasons. She has such a wide variety of information on many topics, and I find that the information on the web site is meaningful as well as interesting. Today I was browsing in the “money” section of the site and came across a headline that really got my attention. The headline said “Spend Just $40 A Week On Groceries”. I had to read on, because if the information in the article is something that I can apply to my family’s grocery budget I will be ecstatic. Like Melba Newsome, the … Continue reading

Wings of Nature Organic Crunch Bars

Sometime between lunch and dinner I feel the sudden urge to grab a snack that satisfies a hunger that calls for a bit of sweetness and crunch. I am never sure what exactly I want but I end up grabbing the first thing that appeals which sadly enough could be a cookie, a few chocolate chips, or another selection I regret. During late afternoon we all get a bit tired and our sugar is low so we crave something a bit sweet to get us through until dinner. However, you don’t want to grab something that will wreck your daily … Continue reading

My Mini Zoo – New Pet Blogger Intro

As a new pet blogger here at Families.com I felt I should write an introduction post and share the story of my mini-zoo with everyone. I’ve had pets ever since I could remember. In fact, none of my homes have felt complete unless there was at least one four-legged furry critter running around. About ten years ago this love for all things feathered, furry or finned hit a high point. My second daughter worked at Petsmart at the time so she always had some tale of woe about a guinea pig, hamster, snake, fish, or other animal that had been … Continue reading

Eating Healthy On A Frugal Budget

Too many people tell me that the reason they eat such unhealthy meals is because healthy food is expensive. I tend to disagree with them, but converting these spendthrifts isn’t all that difficult when I tell them that our family of four eats pretty healthy and my food budget is half of the national average (according to my online research). I’m not a health nut by any means, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that junk food makes you feel terrible and it doesn’t cost less than healthier foods. Not to mention you’ll have fewer trips to … Continue reading
