Creating Community

I consider myself to be an anarchist. Before that makes you worried, let me assure you that I consider myself to be a kind and gentle sort of anarchist. I am a social anarchist, a person who believes that it is the responsibility of individuals and groups in communities to come together to help each other, not necessarily the responsibility of government. This has led to a life full of wonderful activities and many different communities. I also believe that homeschoolers as a group tend to be somewhat anarchic. Home learning is bucking the overall system, after all. It’s making … Continue reading

Trick-or-Treating Minus the Parents

Trick-or-treat solo? My kid? Never! Okay, maybe when’s she 30. Fine! Eighteen, but not a day earlier. I’m kidding. Sort of. Maybe. Not really. With Halloween right around the corner, trick-or-treating is a hot topic around our home. Fortunately, my six-year-old is blissfully unaware that gathering free candy from perfect strangers on Halloween night without mom and dad is an option… maybe, perhaps, possibly, in the distant, distant future. Or, never. Listen, I barely let my kid cross the street without holding my hand, so if you think I’m going to allow her to run rampant around our neighborhood and … Continue reading

Emotional Eating

Do you eat when you are bored, upset, happy, or frustrated? Many do and it leads to overeating and weight gain. Emotional eating can devastate a diet and lead to more intense feelings of guilt and frustration. Simply put, it is unhealthy to eat your way through emotions. “Emotional eating is eating for reasons other than hunger,” says Jane Jakubczak, a registered dietitian at the University of Maryland. “Instead of the physical symptom of hunger initiating the eating, an emotion triggers the eating.” Are you an emotional eater? How often do you find yourself with an intense and onset craving … Continue reading

Eating Beyond Full

If there is one deterrent to losing weight it is eating more than you should. Many of us eat beyond the point of feeling full but the reasons for doing so can vary. I know of some people who believe in the old “eat everything on your plate” adage. Many times this is because they come from a background where either they were taught the same or food may have been scarce growing up, so now they feel like it shouldn’t be wasted. There are also emotional eaters that eat just because they are feeling sad, bored or stressed. Other … Continue reading

Creating Your Pedigree Chart

A pedigree chart is a list that shows your parents, grandparents and great grandparents. You can expand the chart to show as many of your great grandparents as you can determine. You may find it difficult to list ancestors beyond your great grandparents. This depends on how much information you can obtain. Start with the information that your immediate family members have. Has someone in your family already completed a pedigree chart of their own? You may find that someone else in your immediate family has done the majority of the work that you were about to do. If you … Continue reading

Toddler Eating Habits

Many toddlers are picky eaters. However, I haven’t met a toddler who doesn’t love macaroni and cheese. I also haven’t met a toddler who will eat an item from each of the food groups on a daily basis. According to my son’s pediatrician, as long as he is eating when he is hungry, I shouldn’t worry. The problem I have with this philosophy is that our pediatrician isn’t doing my grocery shopping. Last month, my son was determined to eat macaroni and cheese for almost every meal. I could add green beans, peas or potatoes to the meal and he … Continue reading

Confessions of a Fitness Blogger

Some days, I just don’t want to get out of bed. Some days, I just don’t know what to sit down and write when I pull up the screen. I have a confession to make, for someone who writes about fitness, enjoys fitness and works out regularly; I’ve been struggling for months to maintain my motivation, stay alert and just stay focused. It’s hard. Tell Me Something I Don’t Know Life is hard. I’ve always known this and I think hard work encourages a person to persevere beyond what they could do normally. That being said, I think that after … Continue reading

Creating the Perfect Dip Table

A big bowl of chunky dip surrounded by chips, crackers, and veggies solves a lot of life’s entertainment problems. The quick and easy dish serves as an attractive table centerpiece, doesn’t require utensils and is one of the only ways my kid will eat raw vegetables without being bribed. If you’ve been reading my recent guest blogs in the FOOD category then you know that I’ve been on a dip kick as of late. Blame the Green Bay Packers. Our hometown football team is on the road to the Super Bowl and ever since they made the playoffs, party invitations … Continue reading

Going Above and Beyond

What have you done for your pets that pushes your boundaries? What have you done that you consider above and beyond the call of pet parenting? We all have our limits for things that are okay and not okay… what pushes your limits? I ask because my friend J. (who is an amazing jewelry artist) recently found out that her dog is on limited time. Cana suddenly became very lethargic and stopped eating. The veterinarian ran some tests and found that the dog was extremely anemic thanks to advanced cancer. The prognosis isn’t good — Cana may be around for … Continue reading

Eating Disorders and Our Relationship with Food

Did you know that binge eating is more common than anorexia or bulimia? A national survey was conducted by psychiatric researchers at Harvard University Medical School and McLean Psychiatric Hospital. Of the people surveyed, 3.5% of women and 2% of men were binge eating (eating beyond the point of fullness without vomiting). The results for those suffering from anorexia were .9% of women and .3% of men. Those suffering from bulimia were 1.5% of women and .5% of men. Nine thousand people were interviewed for this survey. It’s likely that the number of people suffering from these eating disorders is … Continue reading
