Unhealthy Behaviors and Emotions

Does psychology play a role in the ability to lose weight?  For some people, the battle to shed extra pounds requires more than a good diet and exercise plan.  There could be something much deeper going on. In fact, some experts believe that in the majority of cases where people struggle with their weight, there are unhealthy behaviors and emotions involved.  If that’s true, then the best plan in the world won’t be able to conquer the problem. So it comes down to the heart of the issue.  It may go beyond the lack of willpower to stop eating when … Continue reading

Weight Loss and the Gluten-Free Diet

I have heard rumors that say that people who go on a gluten-free diet, (for health reasons, or otherwise), tend to lose weight. I’ve also heard that eating gluten-free can cause a person to gain weight. Which one is true? It seems that they both are, depending on certain factors. The gluten-free diet is not another fad diet, (although there are some people treating it like that). People who have celiac disease, or who are gluten intolerant, or allergic to gluten, need to eat foods that do not contain gluten. This is purely for health reasons. If you have an … Continue reading

Pregnancy and Baking

Baking is something I have not done in a long time. I absolutely love to bake and have been baking pretty regularly since I was eight years old. The only time I have not felt inclined to bake has been during my first trimesters. Of course there have been times when I really want to bake and choose not to given the amount of “empty calories” I tend to eat when I bake; and it is really hard to lose the baby weight with a dozen freshly baked chocolate chip cookies tempting me to indulge. Most recently, I gave up … Continue reading

Eating Healthy Snacks

If there is one thing that can quickly demolish your efforts at a fit lifestyle it is snacking. Okay, maybe that’s only true for me. For a long time I had no problem getting in enough exercise on a daily basis. I cut down portion sizes at mealtime, introduced healthier items into my meals and cut out the sugary iced tea that I was drinking on a daily basis. But I was still in a battle with snacking. In between all of that good stuff was munching on Doritos, dipping Oreo cookies into a cold glass of milk and enjoying … Continue reading

It is the simple things in life that make a person happy. You hear a light, catchy, tune on the radio, and it sticks with you the rest of the day, making your mood a bit brighter. Yoplait wants to give you a free song to download, and a free yogurt to eat. Yogurt is good for you. It comes in a variety of tastes … Continue reading

Rocco Dispirito’s Book: “Now Eat This! Diet”

Last week on “The View” they had a special segment with the author, Rocco Dispirito, of “Now Eat This! Diet” where he claims you can lose 10 pounds in just two weeks. Rocco says that when you eat more food, your metabolism works at a higher rate and you burn calories faster. However if you starve yourself and you binge after, your body processes those calories as fat. He says there is scientific and medical evidence that shows if you eat more, you lose weight faster. In his diet you eat six times a day, every two-and-a-half hours. On the … Continue reading

Dealing with Emotional Eating

Did you know that fitness can go deep into your emotions? Many people who struggle with their weight and eating right have some deep-seated emotional issues to deal with. I have to say that this has been my story for many years. When I do overeat, I know why. I also know why I sometimes lose the drive to exercise. Yet gaining complete victory over those reasons has yet to happen. You have likely heard the phrase, “Emotional Eating.” This occurs when a person eats, not because they are actually hungry, but because they want to feed a feeling. For … Continue reading

Tempted to Cheat…on a Diet

As I walk through my house I am on a high knowing that all day I have stuck to my diet. Feeling proud of myself I make my way to the kitchen for a scheduled afternoon snack of veggies and cottage cheese. Certain nothing can break my stride I open the refrigerator door to find nothing. No veggies. No cottage cheese. Nothing. Quizzically I look at the calendar on my fridge and realize its Friday. Friday is day I go to the grocery store. I’m too hungry to go the grocery store now. Mercy, I’ve eaten nothing but rabbit food … Continue reading

Eat Cookies and Lose Weight

There are so many diets out there or diet products that have you eat only one type of thing to loose weight. For example, if you eat specially formulated shakes, bars or cookies, you’ll lose weight. Is this true? Well probably. But, that doesn’t mean that you will be fitter, healthier or actually keep the weight off. Back about 10 years ago, I inadvertently lost weight by eating mostly junk food. I was working practically around the clock on a big project and didn’t have time for regular meals. I made sure that I got some workouts in, but honestly … Continue reading

Confessions of a Foodie Mom: Soup “Cravings” and Cookies by the Fire

I’m not doing terribly well in the weight loss department. After a warm and sunny summer and September, we’ve had some of what Winnie-the-Pooh would definitely call “blustery days”. I just want to curl up by the fireplace and listen to the rain on the roof. It seems like a good time to bake cookies with the kids too. And, I crave chocolate. I’m trying to convince myself that I am actually craving soup. I did make a pretty good-tasting, last-minute improvisation on Campbell’s Tomato Soup. I added a can of whole tomatoes, a can of corn, and rosemary, thyme, … Continue reading
