Weight Loss and the Gluten-Free Diet

I have heard rumors that say that people who go on a gluten-free diet, (for health reasons, or otherwise), tend to lose weight. I’ve also heard that eating gluten-free can cause a person to gain weight. Which one is true? It seems that they both are, depending on certain factors. The gluten-free diet is not another fad diet, (although there are some people treating it like that). People who have celiac disease, or who are gluten intolerant, or allergic to gluten, need to eat foods that do not contain gluten. This is purely for health reasons. If you have an … Continue reading

Have Your Cake and Eat it Too! Part 2

Keeping temptation at bay can be a difficult task when you are dieting. Thankfully, there is no need to deprive yourself of goodies during times you are watching your calories. In fact, I have a cake recipe so good that you will crave this cake regardless of watching calories. The nice thing about this recipe is that no fake sugars are used to achieve a sweet, low-fat, and low-cal cake. I have made this cake many times and not one person every accused it of being a fake low-cal cake. In fact, I am always being asked for the recipe. … Continue reading

Week Thirty Two

As my thirty second week of pregnancy began, I realized that my pregnancy will be over before I know it. While I seem to be growing larger by the day, I am still trying to enjoy this pregnancy to the fullest and not take a single day for granted. I have not quite reached that point in my pregnancy where the strain is nearly unbearable but the size of my belly and the loosening of my ligaments etc are taking a tole. At thirty two weeks I sought out the preventative help of a chiropractor. It seems that chiropractic adjustments … Continue reading

Make Mine Without A Bun, Please

It isn’t always easy to eat gluten-free when you are at a restaurant or buffet. Fast food places are extra challenging, at least for me. Very few places are prepared to accommodate the needs of people who have an allergy to gluten, (or to other foods, for that matter). Fortunately, there are some things you can do to make your lunch or dinner a bit safer. When I first discovered that I had a gluten allergy, it made me very aware of how many gluten filled foods can be found in a typical restaurant setting. It doesn’t seem to matter … Continue reading

Pet Obesity

We hear a lot about human obesity, but what about pet obesity? For me it’s a lot simpler to keep my dog in shape by not feeding her too much than to keep myself in shape and ignore that extra slice of cake. Pet obesity, however, is on the rise in America. MSNBC has the details on a 2009 veterinarian survey revealing that 45% of dogs and 58% of cats nationwide are overweight. I’m definitely surprised by these numbers; I expected lower for dogs. I think it’s easier to make sure my dog gets enough exercise than figuring out how … Continue reading

Healthy Dose of Watermelon

My family loves watermelon. Every year we buy a ton of them and quickly eat all of it. My two year old is especially fond of them. She can make a dinner out of just watermelon if I’d let her. Most kids are the same way and devour this beautiful fruit. I never gave the unassuming watermelon too much thought as a health food. I assumed it was a nice way to hydrate as it consists mostly of water as the name suggests. However, this lovely pink fruit has more to it than simple water. Watermelon contains is hydrating. Watermelon … Continue reading

Low Fat Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies

A few years ago I found a recipe for low-fat oatmeal raisin cookies. I prefer chocolate chips over raisins so if you want to save a few more grams of fat and calories you may not want to use chocolate chips. This recipe is so good that even my kids gobbled them up! Normally my kids will complain that low fat options for baked goods are not as good as the full fat. However, this recipe will not make you miss full fat cookies one bit. Keep in mind this recipe is low in fat for an oatmeal cookie but … Continue reading

100 Calorie Snacks

Dieting does not mean you have to give up snacking. In fact, choosing snacks wisely can help you with your weight loss goals rather than deter them. Snacking prevents you from becoming over hungry which leads to unhealthy food choices and overeating. Yet, you must be certain to choose your snacks wisely to also avoid pitfalls. Let’s face it; we all love to snack throughout the day. A nice rule of thumb is choosing a snack at 100 calories. Staying in that range keeps you in control of your snacking intake while making it easy to adjust to your individual … Continue reading
