Are You an Overweight Mom? Get Some Sleep!

Do you crave starchy foods all day? Are you hungry all the time? Is your diet failing because you just can’t stop eating? It could be that you simply aren’t getting enough sleep. According to Dr. Joseph Ojile of the Clayton Sleep Institute, there is a direct connection between poor sleep and obesity. In fact, the National Sleep Foundation has found poor sleep habits to be such a part of obesity that they want obesity therapists to consider this issue in the fight against obesity with as much importance as diet and exercise. The proof came in 2004 when a … Continue reading

Are You an Overweight Mom Too?

Some time ago, a good friend of mine decided that she needed both accountability and support in her weight loss efforts. She decided to start blogging about what she was going through and how she was dealing with it. The title that she chose for her blog was quite simple “Diary of an Overweight Mom”. What Cathy did by starting that blog was amazing. She got other mothers talking about the things we all go through. Not only did Cathy write a great series of blogs but she also spurred the creation of a forum just for us overweight moms. … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: It’s a Bumpy Ride, But Somebody’s Gotta Take It!

Weight loss isn’t easy. It’s not fun. It’s not instant—well, not the kind that sticks anyhow. I’ve been reading the blogs lately about weight loss journeys, and I must say I’ve found a common theme: The Roller Coaster Theme. Weight is up. Weight is down. Weight is back up again. This happens for millions of people every year. For some people, this roller coaster of the pounds lasts a lifetime. Unfortunately, it is this exact up and down then up again that leads to more heart attacks and strokes than most people know about. Did you know it’s healthier to … Continue reading

Momma’s on a Diet: McDonalds? Count me In!

Yes, I know I’m on a diet. By tradition I’m supposed to eat crispbread, low fat cottage cheese, lettuce leaves and a side helping of tomatoes topped with dried rosemary to indicate that food can still have taste whilst being low in calories. But you see, the thing is, I’m not big on tradition – well not as far as diets go. They’ve never really worked for me. Dr Phil McGraw always says “How’s that working for you?” as an indicator as to whether you are doing something the right way or not. Well the truth is, the traditional way … Continue reading

Time To Get Moving! Make the Most of Your Work Day

I am having a difficult time fitting exercise into my week this week. I did so good over the weekend but the first three days of the work week are proving to be quite sedentary. I work as a vocational counselor for the real estate industry during the day so it is not uncommon for a good portion of my day to be spent sitting and on the telephone. Monday I went straight from work to school and did not get home until after ten o’clock. Tuesday I went straight from work to a meeting and dinner reception. Tonight, Wednesday, … Continue reading

Momma’s on a Diet: Who am I and Why am I Here?

I’m Katie-Anne, a middle aged married mom with 2 preschoolers and a bunch of health reasons – pretty much that’s me in a nutshell. Add to this the fact that I’m self employed as a writer, and I’m a transplanted Brit living in Sweden and that’s about it. Oh yeah, there’s that little bit about being overweight. Ok, so it’s not exactly a little bit. When I restarted my diet, just under a week ago, I weighed in at ….wait for it…..(or should that be weight for it!) 292 lb! Even I was impressed in a negative way. How did … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: Sometimes You’ve Got To Bake a Cheesecake

Okay—here’s a thought—making cheesecake is NOT the best idea if you’re trying to avoid calories. But with the holidays and my parents coming into town, all reason was thrown to the wind, and I found myself in the kitchen on Friday making the creamiest cheesecake I could invent. And let me tell you, it was worth it—well, mostly. Let me give you a little information on cheesecake though: That one piece of cheesecake you just have to have; you know, the one that’s so thick and creamy you just can’t resist it? Well that little tiny piece will yield about … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: Finally—SICK of Macaroni and Cheese

I’ve always loved macaroni and cheese. In fact, we go way back—as far as I can remember. Nothing short of a banana cream pie has tasted so good on my lips as a forkful of creamy macaroni and cheese. But now, well, let’s just say the honeymoon has ended. After being sick for a week and dining solely on fast food or some form of pasta, I’m officially sick of carbohydrates. I feel bulked out, full, and a bit like a linebacker. Thankfully, I didn’t gain weight during my carb-fest, but sometimes weight isn’t the only indication that you need … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: Grape Jelly Toast

I’m sick. I’ve been sick nearly all month. Seriously—I finished one round of antibiotics, only to go to Arizona for Thanksgiving and come home sick—again. It’s crazy. Weight loss isn’t easy when you’re sick. This is especially true because carbohydrates are often the easiest food group to digest. Personally, all I want right now is buttered toast with grape jelly. I ate it for breakfast. I ate it last night around 10pm. I ate it yesterday for lunch, too, and will likely eat it for lunch again today. I’ve also eaten crackers and whatever fast food my husband has brought … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Mom: Did I Succeed or Did I Fail?

We’re finally home from our weekend in Arizona. The kids had a great time playing in Grandma’s yard and roasting marshmallows at Grandpa’s. As promised, the Thanksgiving table was filled with yummy dishes, and the temptations didn’t stop there. On Friday night we were treated to a barbecue of burgers and bratwurst…and my mom’s delicious potato salad. On Saturday we grilled again at my dad’s and my step-mom made a delicious banana pudding for dessert. BANANA PUDDING…my favorite dessert of all (next to banana cream pie). So you’ve probably guessed that I lost all sense of restraint and dived head … Continue reading
