Definition of “Healthy Eating”

When I was in school, we were taught about the food pyramid, which provided clear instruction on foods to eat and their importance. Somehow, between then and now, the food pyramid has been ignored. Too bad – this tool remains valid. While we have seen a few minor adjustments, I recommend you go back and look at the food pyramid to get a better idea of what healthy meaning really means. Unfortunately, one fad diet after another has surfaced over the past 10 years. While some are better than others are, people have actually died from some of these so-called … Continue reading

Not My Idea of Romance

Not so much for me In my first two marriage posts I mentioned not really adhering to or enjoying “lovey-dovey” relationships. I realized if I’m going to keep using that as a contrast to what my marriage is like, I ought to define how I’m using the term. The simplest way, because otherwise the English major in me will extrapolate the phrase to death, is to do so with a story. My husband and I don’t give each other anniversary gifts, but that wasn’t always the case. When we were younger we did such things because we thought we should … Continue reading

IOM Recommends Eliminating Co-Pays for Birth Control

A new report released by the Institute of Medicine recommends that birth control and contraceptive counseling should be things that are completely covered by health insurance. The expert panel considers women’s health services to be preventative medicine, and therefore, available to insured women for free, (with no co-pay required). Last year, a panel of medical and public health experts was put together. The group was specifically trying to determine if women’s health services fall under the category of “preventative health care”, or if they did not. The Affordable Care Act requires all health insurance plans that were started on or … Continue reading

Avoiding Childhood Obesity

Helping your children to make good food choices when they are young will help them to avoid future health problems and specifically problems with childhood obesity. From the day that they are born you are your child’s first teacher. It is only normal that they would want to mimic the people that they love most in this world—their parents. Your children will learn how to establish healthy eating habits most directly from you. Although it is tempting to grab a high-calorie, empty food snack try to avoid this whenever possible, especially when your children are around. During mealtimes, eat as … Continue reading

Little Things Mean a Lot

To lose a quick few pounds for that high school reunion in a couple of weeks you only have to remember a some simple rules. It might be painful to some, but if you really want to do it, there is a way. • Do not eat after 7 p.m. This means absolutely nothing. • Drink ten 8-ounce glasses of water each day. This will flush out your body. • Skip the fast food restaurants. Go home and make a salad or some thinly sliced turkey and a vegetable. • Do not drink your calories. Forget the milkshakes and cappuccinos. … Continue reading

Weight a Minute! – Making Friends with Food

I’m now weighing in at 258.0. This is fabulous – I’ve been trying for a long time to get below 260.0, and I’m so glad that I’ve finally done it. My ticker now says that I have 98 pounds to go, as opposed to 100 and above, and I’m delighted. I’ve been going to the gym and riding the recumbent bike all week long, and I’m starting to see a little definition here and there, and also some overall smaller-ness taking place. However, I have been a little sad because I’ve been at 258.0 all week long. I’d hoped to … Continue reading

Do You Need a Multivitamin?

This week I threw out my multivitamin. It was partly due to the recent news of contaminants found in some vitamins. It was partly because if I don’t take them at the same time I eat a large meal they make me sick. It was also partly because I’ve been using them as a crutch. Let’s face it, it’s a lot easier to think “did I take my multivitamin today” than “did I have enough servings of leafy greens today”. You just swallow that little vitamin pill and call it nutritional eating for the day. Sadly, there really is no … Continue reading

The Marriage Week in Review October 21-27

This was a great week here in the Marriage blog and as always; it’s a pleasure to share the challenge of bringing you marriage news and information with Sherry. Our guest blogger this week was Catherine Ipizcade and I suggest you check out her blogs on celebrating her marriage as well as bridal shower tips. For Sherry and I, the biggest challenge came at the end of the week as the New Jersey Supreme Court handed down their decision on Same-Sex unions. While Sherry and I often come down on opposite sides of this issue, we believe in healthy and … Continue reading

Why do Most Diets Fail

If you were to look at the majority of diets people try, most fail. In fact, not only does the person on the diet not lose weight but also often when the diet is over, he or she will actually gain more weight than what was trying to be lost in the first place. As you can imagine, this is frustrating but there is good reason. You see, when someone eats too much, it is because the brain does not have enough neurotransmitters. What happens is that this imbalance causes the body to try to find a replacement, usually in … Continue reading
