Countdown to 2007: Set Your Goals NOW

by Catherine Ipcizade | More from this Blogger

Yes, I realize the bells and whistles haven't gone off yet, signaling the start of the New Year-the time when all resolutions are made and few are kept. But maybe that's the problem with keeping them-maybe, just maybe, if people planned out their resolutions instead of blurting them out without thought, they'd have a better chance at keeping them.

What are your weight loss goals for 2007? In case you need a little nudge, here are some great goals to consider:

Drink more water-this may seem silly, but our bodies need water more than they need food. And very few people drink enough water. In fact, did you know that by the time you've started feeling thirsty, you're already dehydrated? It's recommended that you drink at least 6-8 glasses of water per day. Why not give it a try. Give up that extra soda or cup of coffee and enjoy a glass of water with a squeeze of lemon instead. It'll make you feel better and look better, too.

Move more-do you move at a snail's pace? Have you never seen the staircase in your office building? Perhaps this is the year to get off the couch and get moving. Studies have shown that exercise, even just 30 minutes 3 times per week, can greatly improve your cardiovascular health. So take the plunge. Go for a brisk walk around the block. Take up swimming or hiking or skating. Or (gasp!) consider finally joining a gym or using the membership you've had for years. Your quality of life will improve immensely, and you'll lose weight in the process.

Eat better-what does this mean to you? If you've got a sweet tooth, it might mean laying off the chocolate cupcakes for awhile and opting for some celery sticks with peanut butter instead. If you're a salt-addict, it could mean foregoing the potato chips and opting for baked pretzels. It might mean starting a regimented eating plan (low-cal, low-carb, etc.) It might mean cutting down on certain foods or eliminating certain things from your diet. Whatever route you decide to take, eating better and nutritiously will make your body feel better. You'll have more energy to do the things you enjoy, and your trimmer waistline will leave lots of energy for new clothes shopping! J
