Losing the Pregnancy Weight Part III

Burning calories is some what intangible. I really have no idea how many calories I am burning each day by breast feeding my daughter. I would like to give credit to a healthier diet and a commitment to long term exercise for my seemingly quicker come back from having my daughter. Having these habits in the beginning really do make a difference. At almost five weeks post-partum I have not actively worked at loosing the excess weight for very long. My efforts have just begun and I am determined to get closer to my pre-pre pregnancy weight (what I weighted … Continue reading

My Clothes Have Gotten Too Big

One of the best parts about being on a diet is when you actually see signs that it is working! After several weeks on the Atkins diet, I managed to lose a noticeable amount of weight. Should I buy new clothing now, or wait until I get down to my “goal weight”? When I started the Atkins diet, back in June, I weighed 180 pounds. It is now nearly the end of August, and I weigh 169 pounds. This is a total of eleven pounds of weight loss! While I am pretty excited to be more than ten pounds lighter … Continue reading

When Weight Loss Affects Milk Supply

As wonderful as pregnancy is, most mothers will admit to feeling huge in months directly before and after giving birth. In my ninth month of pregnancy, I could not believe how big my belly had gotten or how swollen my ankles (or lack thereof) were. After I gave birth, I decided that there was no way I’d ever fit into my pre-pregnancy clothes; I was just too big. Sure, I’d lose most of the weight, but I’d never be as small as I once had been. Most of the time, it didn’t matter that much to me. I had a … Continue reading

Avoiding Holiday Weight Gain

According to most surveys, the average American gains between seven and 12 pound over the holidays. No doubt the constant treats everywhere and a busy schedule that leaves little time for exercise can contribute to this. Plus with the warmer weather, people naturally have a tendency to bundle up in bulky clothes that can hide weight gain, even from themselves. Still, it is not completely inevitable that you will stop losing weight or even start gaining it over the holidays. You just have to be a bit more diligent with how you go about your day. Before a party or … Continue reading

Swine Flu Scare and Weight Loss?

What a week the past one has been. Early in the week, I started fighting some intestinal bug. I had to skip the workouts for a couple of days due to stomach cramps and an overall weakness. I suppose the fact that I was living basically on ginger-ale and graham crackers and not keeping much of that in my body probably compensated for the downtime in exercise. I don’t think I gained or lost. After a few days, I felt better and went back to my normal routine. I haven’t been able to walk or run due to the fact … Continue reading

Clothes and Weight Loss

I have to admit that my weight loss has been on the slow side. But because my main goal is to make my lungs and heart stronger, and to make this routine really part of my normal life, I am okay with that. Slow and stead wins the race, right? I’m still not counting calories, and I still don’t own a scale, but I do have two things to substitute. I have a better awareness of exactly what I am putting into my body and when, so there is little mindless eating. And instead of a scale, I have my … Continue reading

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Weight Loss

This has been an interesting week for me with a few different ups and downs. Feel free to play some mood music from your favorite western movie, in the background as you read this. “Doodeedeedoo Wah, wah wah.” The Good I had a particularly great exercise day on Saturday. With no where pressing that we needed to be, I was able to walk and run for a longer time period, proving to myself that I could do it. I was also able to relax and not be so stressed about getting back on time in the morning to shuffle my … Continue reading

Overcoming Weight Loss Obstacles

The God Factor I don’t know if your are a spiritual person, but as I was sitting in church on Sunday, I absorbed the message put forth by the pastor, “Those doing God’s work will be faced with obstacles. It is guaranteed.” Now, while I am not implying that my personal weight loss is the Lord’s work, although of course I look to Him for direction in all of my life (and He is great at helping one overcome obstacles), the message did get me to start thinking about recent obstacles that I have faced so far. Week Four I’ve … Continue reading

Diary of an Overweight Hamster

I’ve just completed week three of my journey to weight loss. In some sense, this has been the hardest week yet. The novelty of getting out there and exercising has worn off. The fact that I haven’t seen a dramatic visible difference is discouraging. I’m vowing to go out and get a scale this week, so that I have some sort of bench mark. I may even get up the courage to try on my “cut off the circulation” pants and see if they are more comfortable. I’ve been wrestling with what to call this weight loss diary. I’ve been … Continue reading

Two Dozen MORE Reasons to Lose Weight

Losing weight will be CONVENIENT: • I will plan meals ahead of time, saving time at the store and at restaurants and fast-food establishments. • Eating only what I have planned will save time previously spent thinking about food, looking for a snack, eating extra food. • I will save time not sitting in doctor’s offices for weight-related illnesses. • I’ll save time shopping for clothes that fit! • I will save time by working thoroughly through the steps of this weight-loss program rather than have to do another weight-loss program later. The first stages of changing habits are the … Continue reading
