It seems like you are doing everything right, yet the pounds aren’t dropping. Well there are some important things to consider. The first is that it could be your body is gaining muscle. Making Better Food Choices

I’m always looking for ways to make sure I have healthier things in the house for Hailey to eat. As a working single mother I’m not always home to make sure she makes good choices. The easiest way to make sure Hailey is eating things that are good for her when I’m not around is to make sure unhealthy items never make it into the house.   Packaged foods in general are rarely healthy, most contain too much salt, sugar or trans fats. Store bought cookies are high in calories and trans fats and loaded with sugar and preservatives. If … Continue reading

Weight Loss Its A Family Thing

SO my weight loss journey has become a family thing. All 3 of my kids are considered to be overweight and one even obese when it comes to the BMI. It is not because we don’t pay attention to what the kids are eating because we really do. I truly believe part is genetics now they are all adopted so I cannot use the fact that they have my genes as a reason but having seen pictures of their biological family I do think it is part of it. I had taken my daughter to the doctor once when he … Continue reading

Weight Loss and the Gluten-Free Diet

I have heard rumors that say that people who go on a gluten-free diet, (for health reasons, or otherwise), tend to lose weight. I’ve also heard that eating gluten-free can cause a person to gain weight. Which one is true? It seems that they both are, depending on certain factors. The gluten-free diet is not another fad diet, (although there are some people treating it like that). People who have celiac disease, or who are gluten intolerant, or allergic to gluten, need to eat foods that do not contain gluten. This is purely for health reasons. If you have an … Continue reading

Extreme Way to Lose Weight: Tongue Patch Diet

I recently learned of an extreme way to lose weight, the tongue patch diet. It is a surgical procedure where a doctor uses prolene mesh; a material used to repair hernias and sutures it to the tongue. This makes eating solid foods very painful, limiting a person’s diet to liquids. The patch usually stays on for no more than a month and according to some doctors, it has had success. There are also claims that side effects have been minimal. There is so much to say about such an extreme and potentially dangerous way to “help” someone lose weight. First … Continue reading

What are you teaching your children about weight?

Children learn by watching their parents. Even though there are many things competing for our children’s attention and devotion in the end parental influence reigns supreme. Parental influence is the greatest factor in how a child behaves and the choices he comes to make. Sure there are exceptions to every rule and this is not a blame on parents for mislead children. However, parents must heed warning that children are always watching and looking to use for guidance in all things. As such what do parents teach their children about weight and body image? Children of overweight parents are twice … Continue reading

Weight Loss and an Injured Knee

Recently I was in a minor car accident. The only injury I sustained happened when my knee hit the dashboard upon impact. I had hoped this injury would be healed quickly. However, the knee is a complex part of the body and one we use quite often. Being told that I had to stay put with my knee elevated sounded like a mini vacation and an excuse to be sedentary for a short while. That shore while has turned into three weeks and counting. Some knee injuries heal in 4 weeks but it can take up to 12 months for … Continue reading

Will becoming a vegetarian help me loose weight?

What do Alyssa Milano, Ashley Judd, and Natalie Portman all have in common? They are all vegetarians and they are all thin. In fact, have you noticed that Forrest Whitaker looks like he lost weight? It is reported that he lost 80 pounds! Forrest Whitaker is a fairly new vegetarian. Seeing these images many wonder if it is at all possible to find an overweight vegetarian. It is this notion that has inspired many to take their own vegetarian journey. However, is this rational thinking? Could it be possible for Forrest Whitaker to have lost 80 pounds and still eat … Continue reading

Smart Choices At McDonald’s

You rush from the bank to pick up the kids at school to drop one off at soccer and the other off at football. By the time you get home there will be no time to make a healthy dinner and with pennies in the back after paying for football cleats and soccer uniforms, there is no money to eat out. So what’s a mom to do? Can you in good conscience choose a fast food restaurant to feed your family? You know the content of fat, oil, trans-fat and who knows what else that will invade your kid’s bodies … Continue reading
