My Cupcake Kid

You might think that a kid with a sweet tooth is, while normal, not exactly ideal. We want our children to eat their veggies, have balanced diets, and to the extent it is possible avoid over-eating in categories that we know to be harmful to them in one way or another. Sweets are characteristically in this latter category, as they are rumored to cause hyperactive children and definitively rot teeth according to dentists and tooth-oriented businesses everywhere. So you’d be forgiven for thinking that my own little cupcake kid is for some reason a bad thing. You’d be forgiven for … Continue reading

Frugal Protein Sources

Unfortunately, it is a fact right now that food prices are continuing to rise, and the experts are telling us that it is going to get worse before it gets better, if it ever does get better. Although most food is effected by the current food price hikes, the cost of protein sources is particularly worrisome. Meat prices had already been high, and now with the drought will get even higher. Peanut butter, a once inexpensive source of protein, has now gotten more expensive and may no longer be the best choice when you are on a limited budget. This … Continue reading

March and Food Holidays

I love food holidays. If you have stuck around awhile you know that I often write about national food holidays. I think its fun and a great excuse to try a new food or recipe. As I searched the food holidays for March, I came up with eight national food month long “holidays”. Eight is quite a bit. I often wonder who came up with all of this. Can … Continue reading

Eating Habits Of Busy Moms

I worry about what I’ve taught my daughter about food. One area that I don’t worry about is body image, she and I are both naturally thin and can pretty much eat anything we want. I don’t think Hailey has ever even heard me use the word diet and she’s certainly never seen me deprive myself of my favorite foods. What I worry about is all the packaged and convenience foods she’s eaten over the years. When I was married I cooked most nights, actual meals, not just heating something up in the microwave. When I got divorced I worked … Continue reading

Some foods get a whole month of celebration, some a week and some only a day. Since finding a fun site that lets me know which foods are celebrated every month I am going to drive everyone crazy. As you may already know August is National Peach Month, National Catfish Month and National Brownie at Brunch Month. You may know this already because if you read the Weight Loss … Continue reading

The Paleo Diet

What is the Paleo Diet? The Paleo Diet is also known as the caveman diet or the Paleolithic diet. The diet is rooted in the idea that humans ate in a healthier manner during ancient times. The Need for Protein (Part VII)

While pregnant women need to ensure they’re getting enough protein, they are not limited to meat. In fact, including a variety of protein foods will not only meet their protein requirement but also enrich their diet with other essential nutrients and add diversity to their diet. Nuts and seeds are another excellent source of protein and provide for a quick and easy snack.
