Losing the Pregnancy Weight Part II

I won the competition which was both exciting and sad. I was ecstatic that I won, I put in lots of hard work, but there were lots of other teachers who had more weight to lose and they could have easily beat me and should have. Either way the “biggest loser” competition was the motivation I needed to jump start my weight loss and get me in the habit of regular exercise. I did not stop exercising after the competition … I still had about ten more pounds to lose to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. Instead, I continued … Continue reading

Losing the Pregnancy Weight Part I

Losing the baby weight can be and often is a rather difficult challenge. With my first pregnancy, I did not have the long established habit of regular exercise; I was well within the normal and healthy body mass index but I had very little muscle tone; I was not in shape. I began exercising with my first pregnancy (talk about a real motivating reason to exercise). Even though I exercised regularly throughout my first pregnancy, my workouts were really tame. The biggest challenge came after my son was born. I had gained about twenty pounds more than I had wanted … Continue reading

New Study on Breastfeeding Difficulties

A new study by researchers at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio says that new, first-time moms who are older, overweight, or have difficulties breastfeeding in the days after birth may find they have a delay in full breast milk production. As you may know, right after birth, a woman produces colostrum until her full breast milk comes in. This is considered “delayed lactogenesis” if full milk production doesn’t happen within the first 72 hours after birth. If the baby doesn’t get enough milk, it can lead to dehydration and weigh loss. In the study, which can be … Continue reading

Bali Club and Giveaway

The Bali bra is famously popular in the land of women’s lingerie. Anyone and everyone has heard of it. They make a bra that is so comfortable you may even want to wear it to bed. The Bali Company was born in the late 1920s. A young woman who worked at a bra manufacturing company decided to take it upon herself and improve on what was being sold on the market at that time. She designed a bra which accentuated a woman’s figure instead of squelching a woman’s figure like the bras did at that time. Sara Stein made these … Continue reading

When Weight Loss Affects Milk Supply

As wonderful as pregnancy is, most mothers will admit to feeling huge in months directly before and after giving birth. In my ninth month of pregnancy, I could not believe how big my belly had gotten or how swollen my ankles (or lack thereof) were. After I gave birth, I decided that there was no way I’d ever fit into my pre-pregnancy clothes; I was just too big. Sure, I’d lose most of the weight, but I’d never be as small as I once had been. Most of the time, it didn’t matter that much to me. I had a … Continue reading

The Pressure to Lose Baby Weight

The average woman gains 25-35 pounds during pregnancy. Much of this weight is lost after the baby is born, and the rest is slowly lost during the first 3-6 months. This is completely normal. It seems that along with the Hollywood trend of having babies (and publicizing it) has come the trend of losing the baby weight in just a few weeks. I remember looking at a picture of Jessica Alba a few weeks after she had her daughter and I was shocked to see she looked the same, if not better, than she did before she ever got pregnant. … Continue reading

Breastfeeding and Reflux

There are a few things you can count on with a newborn. They will definitely sleep. . .and wake. . .around the clock. They will soil through their diapers and their clothing at least once before they are 6 months old. And they spit up. I tend to think that reflux is often over diagnosed. That’s not to minimize the experience of those parents whose infants have reflux. It’s a difficult experience because reflux babies are in so much pain that they are frequently crying, very clingy and generally smell sort of like. . .well. . .puke. It’s a rough … Continue reading

Valorie’s Breastfeeding Index

Later today I will post a review of the baby blog of 2007 so why does breastfeeding get its own category? Well, in part as an answer to readers who want to read what I’ve written on breastfeeding. I’ve written so much on breastfeeding at this point that you all have asked for an index of sorts so it’s easier to find what you’re looking for. It’s also in part because I’ve become known as the breastfeeding lady. . .guru. . .whatever you want to call it. I’ve been at this breastfeeding business for a long time and many of … Continue reading
