Encouraging Your Teens to Eat Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day… so the saying goes. But try telling that to your family! My younger brother used to hit the snooze on his alarm clock until the last possible second, then throw on some close and rush off to high school without eating. There are lots of “good” reasons for skipping breakfast: I wanted to sleep in. There’s nothing good to eat. It takes too long to make something. I’m not hungry when I first wake up. I want to lose weight. But research has shown that eating breakfast can help boost concentration … Continue reading

Eggs for Breakfast Every Day?

“I hear what you’re saying about protein and I do feel great when I have eggs for breakfast on the weekends but I just don’t have the time to make eggs during the week. Any suggestions?” Ah, eggs. These are just the most magical protein in my opinion. They are inexpensive, filling, low in calories, tasty and easily prepared. Did you know that you can prepare eggs in advance and freeze or refrigerate them? Yes, you can! You can prepare omelets ahead of time and place them in a microwave-safe plastic container so you can just pack them in your … Continue reading

Don’t Eat Cereal for Breakfast!

“My friend told me that eating cereal for breakfast is a bad thing. Americans have been doing it for generations. How can it be bad?” True. Americans have been eating cereal for breakfast beginning with the Baby Boomer generation. Americans have also been getting more and more overweight beginning with the Baby Boomer generation. The fact of the matter is that cereal was never sold as a solo breakfast food. You may recall the commercials that billed a bowl of cereal as a “healthy part of this nutritious breakfast”. That nutritious breakfast included a glass of milk, a piece of … Continue reading

You Need to Eat Breakfast to Lose Weight

I’m so guilty on this one. I almost never eat a good breakfast. I generally have a few cups of coffee (something new since the twins were born) and something sweet. By 10am I am back to my normal fruit, granola, and low fat yogurt routine. But researchers are discovering that what you eat to break the fast. . .may influence how you eat the rest of the day. Not only that, but people who regularly eat breakfast are at a significantly lower risk for obesity and type II diabetes. So it goes without saying, eat your breakfast! Eating sugary … Continue reading

The Sneaky Mama and Her Oatmeal

The Sneaky Mama is back with another delicious and healthful way to feed your picky eaters! For those of you who are new or don’t remember, the sneaky mama (yes, it’s really me–but don’t tell anyone!) is a pro at getting good healthy food into her extremely picky daughter and her other not so picky kids. Why Oatmeal? Oatmeal is just one of those miracle foods. It is a whole grain, and is high in water soluble fiber. The reason I love oatmeal is that it is a win/win breakfast for our family: it’s good for my husband and I, … Continue reading

Is the “Special K” Challenge For You?

Have you ever taken the “Special K” challenge?  I did a few years ago, back when the only real good cereal was their red berries.  Since then, numerous other kinds of low-fat cereals have been developed, including blueberry and fruit & yogurt (my personal favorite). I can tell you that I did have success with this challenge.  However, there is a downfall to it, which I will share at the end. So how does the challenge work?  You eat two servings of the cereal everyday, along with just half a cup of low-fat milk.  You can do this for either … Continue reading

Naked Lunch

I had to get really creative, or at least desperate, with what was packed this morning in my kids’ lunches. Without bread, the sandwiches would be a bit, well, naked. You see, last night we never did get to the grocery store, so we are out of basics, such as bread, milk and dark chocolate. Yikes. Okay, so the dark chocolate was for me, but we do normally incorporate bread and milk somewhere in meals for our children. Typically, I am an uber-planner, well, an uber-planner wanna be. I haven’t yet obtained my certificate or badge, and the phrase “let … Continue reading

Emergency Kit

Every time I walk into my basement I feel a little guilty. I live in Utah, pretty much the preparedness capital of America and I am unprepared. I think part of that is that I don’t know what I’m preparing for and the second thing holding me back is that I tend to overwhelm myself. If three days of food is good a month would be better. No, wait! I better get a year! So I overwhelm myself with the sheer volume of stuff I think I need to keep my family safe. Then I worry about us being in … Continue reading

Seeing Red on Valentine’s Day

My 6-year-old is counting down the days to her first grade class Valentine’s Day party. She’s dying to pass out the all-red treats she chose for all of her classmates and hand her teacher the all-red Love Day card she made with a very red Sharpie. It’s all about red during the countdown to February 14th. Thank goodness her Catholic School uniform is partially red or I’d really be in for it. You’d think the class party would be enough to satisfy my daughter’s obsession with red, but nooooooo, she wants to paint her entire day red, including her meals. … Continue reading
