The Power of Comfort Food

On Friday, when my children arrived home, safely, it was all that I could do to not to gather them all up and never let them go. After recent events, I know I am not the only parent out there that felt that way. We’ve all been shaken up. Anyone who has ever loved a child, a sister or a friend has had to face this harsh new reality. There was no way, that night, that I was going to deny my children most anything. It is a good thing that no one asked for a pony. Instead, they asked … Continue reading

The Food and Drug Administration has approved of the use of a drug called Afinitor Disperz. The FDA has approved it specifically for the use of treating brain tumors in young children who have a rare genetic disease. The drug was cleared under the FDA’s accelerated approval program. Earlier this year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a drug called Kalydeco. That was the first drug that the FDA has approved that was designed to help treat the cause of cystic fibrosis. Kalydeco was specifically approved for people who have cystic fibrosis and who are age six or older. … Continue reading

The House of Mouse is going healthy… what’s a parent to do? Now where I am going to find out which toys are being featured in McDonald’s Happy Meals? Apparently, not the the Disney Channel. Is Your Brain Shrinking? A New Study Says Stress Can Do It

Okay, it wasn’t bad enough that we are only using a small percentage of our brains. Now a new study shows that stress may actually be shrinking our brains. Suffering stressful events, such as a divorce or break up, an accident or other stressful life situation will actually shrink the brain. Now this is another good reason to do that yoga. The study found that being stressed out by these types of stressful events led to less gray matter in a particular part of the brain, the prefrontal cortex, and important little piece of your cranium that regulates emotions and … Continue reading

October 24th is Food Day

Tomorrow is Food Day. What is Food Day you might ask. Food Day was instituted by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI). The day was established 34 years ago, but has been on a hiatus. However, now reinstated, the CSPI hopes to raise awareness of how our food supply has become industrialized. CSPI also hopes people will see that many of us have unhealthy diets. But, on the upside, the CSPI hopes to show people that they can eat a healthier diet that is also part of a sustainable food system. I know that I can see … Continue reading

What Kinds of Foods Don’t Have Gluten?

One of the things that people who have gluten allergies must do is learn about the types of foods that do not contain gluten. I have other food allergies, so I knew the process that would be involved in making this discovery. Realizing that I had to avoid foods with gluten meant relearning what was “safe” for me to eat. After doing some research about all of the foods that contain gluten I was left with the distinct impression that there was no longer anything left that would be safe for me to eat. It felt as though everything contained … Continue reading

Foods to Help Prevent Diabetes

Since diabetes runs in my family, I am trying to do everything I can to avoid getting it. Diabetes statistics in the U.S. are staggering. Almost 26 million adults and children have diabetes. And, even more frightening, 79 million are pre-diabetic like myself. I’ve preached about how exercise and diet are great ways to starve off diabetes as long as possible, but there are also some foods that can help fight it. Bean Beans are a great way to raise your blood sugar levels very slowly because they are considered high-quality carbohydrates. And think of how many you have to … Continue reading

Brain Food

Brains use up 20% of your carbohydrate intake. Brains love carbs and so do I! I should be the smartest person in the world since I consume more carbs than my share. Yet, my brain is smarter than me since it craves a certain type of carbohydrate. My brain does not want a daily intake of Twinkies and grape soda. My brain seeks food that helps it run on full power. That requires a steady supply of sugar. When a steady supply is provided I move along my day calmly and in check. Erratic behavior occurs when my brain operates … Continue reading

Avocados: The Perfect Baby Food

New parents probably receive a lot of conflicting advice when it comes to starting their babies on solids. Some say that, as soon as your baby starts reaching for your food, it means he is ready to eat it. (Does that mean that when my baby reaches for a bottle of beer, he’s ready for that, too?) Others claim that, if your baby doesn’t sleep through the night, adding solids to her diet will help her to sleep longer. (I’d like to find some of those people and make them explain to me why my daughter woke up to nurse … Continue reading
