Becoming A Big Brother Takes Time

If you had asked me four months ago how Dylan was feeling about being a big brother, I would have told you that he was not at all happy about it. While he never went so far as to ask me to return Blake to the hospital from whence he came, he was not exactly excited about sharing me with another little person. In the beginning, it seemed like no matter how hard I tried to make sure that Dylan’s needs were taken care of, I still felt as if I were falling short of meeting them. At first, it … Continue reading

Becoming a Big Brother or Sister – Part 3

As I mentioned in the last post, I am not sure what my husband and I were thinking when we brought our son to the hospital with us. We may not have been thinking, as the whole situation was rather chaotic. Even though there was a bed in the room for my husband and Dylan, it became clear to us at about two o’clock in the morning that we had made a very big mistake. I was in my hospital bed hooked up to an IV. My husband was trying to get Dylan to sleep in the other bed. We … Continue reading

Becoming a Mom Through Adoption

On this Mother’s Day I wanted to write about my becoming a Mom. I did not become a Mom the good old fashioned way; I became a Mom by adopting children. We opened our hearts and home to three children. They are all siblings and we had the two boys join us in July of 2002 and then five months later their baby sister joined our family just in time for our first Christmas as a family. Our children all know that they have two Moms’ and two Dads’; they have always known that they are adopted. We don’t hide … Continue reading

Reading is a favorite pastime of millions of people. There is nothing like settling down with a favorite book, or a new book that you have been dying to read, and diving into the story. Will becoming a vegetarian help me loose weight?

What do Alyssa Milano, Ashley Judd, and Natalie Portman all have in common? They are all vegetarians and they are all thin. In fact, have you noticed that Forrest Whitaker looks like he lost weight? It is reported that he lost 80 pounds! Forrest Whitaker is a fairly new vegetarian. Seeing these images many wonder if it is at all possible to find an overweight vegetarian. It is this notion that has inspired many to take their own vegetarian journey. However, is this rational thinking? Confessions of a Foodie Mom: It was the Best of Times, it was the Worst of Times…

This week I finally dropped below the level where I’d plateaued for so long…and then, according to this morning’s scale, I put four pounds back on. In four days. I know that weight can vary by a couple of pounds just depending on whether you’re dehydrated or not, so I’m trying not to panic, but a four-pound gain does—and should—get my attention a bit better than a two-pound gain. It’s been a few weeks since I made time in my schedule to write everything down. I did, this week, fulfill the resolution I made to my diet group to spend … Continue reading

Pilates Becoming Popular with Men

For years Pilates has been popular with women looking to improve their flexibility and strengthen their core. But, a new study out shows that the exercises designed for total body conditioning are now attracting a record number of men. Some 12.5 million people participated in Pilates in 2006, the latest year for which figures are available, up from 9.4 million in 2003, according to the Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association. What’s more, of those 12.5 million more than a third are men. That’s up more than half from 2003. Experts theorize that the growing number of men who are supplementing their … Continue reading

Quickly Becoming Obsolete – Part 3

I am still talking about things that were once popular, but are now vanishing: Handwritten Letters Oh, I hate this. What is more romantic than a handwritten love letter? I mean, an email just doesn’t do it, does it? Yet it is estimated that in 2006, 183 billion emails were sent – each day! Add in all the cell phones and all the text messaging and who has time to actually sit down and write a letter? Wild Horses In the early 1900s, there were approximately two million wild horses roaming the U.S. Now, the National Geographic News estimates that … Continue reading
