AAP Recommends Some Schools Start Later

Having trouble getting your teenager to get up and prepare for school in the morning? There is a reason why that it happening – and it isn’t entirely your teen’s fault. Some of it has to do with developmental biology. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is recommending that the start time of the school day be later for middle schools and high schools. The purpose is to combat sleep deprivation in teens. The AAP published a new policy statement in August of 2014. They are recommending that schools delay the start time of class until 8:30 in the morning … Continue reading

Keeping Fit Boosts Your Energy

Does it seem like you are always tired? I used to feel that way. I literally battled fatigue for years. I had all kinds of “reasons” for that. It was because I was a new mom. I then had three children. I was homeschooling. I was working. I had teenagers. I was this and I was that. I always had these reasons to validate why I was so tired. I had always heard that exercise would give you more energy but I guess I never really took that seriously. I have never been very overweight. I have always been at … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: July 2008

Two of my three children are summer babies. That is, they were born in the summer and had their first months surrounded by sunshine streaming in the windows, the sound of birds chirping, and days spent wearing nothing but a diaper and a “onsie.” I made sure that they had Fourth of July outfits ready, even though one of them arrived a week after the holiday. I guess he just wasn’t interested in the parade. Do you have a summer baby, too? We had a lot of new information to share this past month, such as recall notices and new … Continue reading

My Day on the Scarsdale Diet

This is a two-week diet that is high in fruits and vegetables, very low carbohydrate and fairly low in protein. See my original blog on the diet for full details. I decided it was time to try Scarsdale since it was one of the few diets I have not tried and I am trying to lose quite a few pounds of pregnancy weight. As you can see by the title of this blog, I didn’t quite make it the full two weeks. In fact, I didn’t even make it through the first day! I did lose two pounds that day … Continue reading

Weight a Minute! A Few of My Not Favorite Things

Nights without sleeping and children with yelling, Hours on footsies with frantic-paced selling, Trying to cope with the stress it all brings – These are a few of my not favorite things . . . Lisa Pietsch has been telling me for a long time that I need to get more sleep and reduce stress if I want to lose weight. I understand the principle, but to understand it and then to apply it are two entirely different things. With four small children, books to finish editing, a house to clean, and home schooling, my life is pretty hectic. Then … Continue reading

Common Diet Pitfalls

There are some very common diet pitfalls that few people know about. You may very well have fallen prey to one of them. Read on and see if any of these sound familiar. You Eat on the Run In our society, we take everything at top speed. Breakfast is taken on the run and wolfed down while applying mascara, driving to work and talking on the phone. Chances are you were doing so many other things when you ate breakfast that you don’t even remember what (or how much) you ate! We don’t take time to eat any more and … Continue reading

Don’t Fall for Enviga

Nestle (a division of Coca-Cola) has produced a new drink called Enviga and claims that this energy drink can help us burn calories. Let’s see how it works… The caffeinated, carbonated drink comes in green tea, berry and peach flavors. It is sold in 12-ounce cans at a price of $1.29 to $1.49 per can. The claim is that it will help us to burn an extra 60-100 calories when we consume three cans a day. (That’s a cost of up to $4.47 for 100 calories burned.) Nestle isn’t making these claims without having done at least a little homework … Continue reading

Lose the Stress – Lose the Weight

Yes, I know. I’ve told you to lay off the soda, get some sleep and now I’m telling you to get rid of your stress. These, of course, are all things that we all want to do but the demands of a busy lifestyle often take precedence and we forget to take better care of ourselves and give our bodies time to relax and sleep eight hours a day. Well, my friends, it just isn’t possible to look healthy without being healthy. The fact of the matter is the biggest hurdle for most of us to lose weight is to … Continue reading

Waiting for the Numbers to Drop

Sometimes we think we’re doing everything right to lose weight. We eat right and exercise just like the pros tell us to but nothing seems to happen. I’ve been there. I know how frustrating it can be. You feel as though you are starving yourself and know that the workouts you are doing should be making your butt melt off but every morning you end up staring at the very same numbers on the scale. Nothing is happening and you’re about to dive into some ice cream to get over your feeling of inadequacy. Well, don’t touch that spoon! Here … Continue reading

Are You an Overweight Mom? Get Some Sleep!

Do you crave starchy foods all day? Are you hungry all the time? Is your diet failing because you just can’t stop eating? It could be that you simply aren’t getting enough sleep. According to Dr. Joseph Ojile of the Clayton Sleep Institute, there is a direct connection between poor sleep and obesity. In fact, the National Sleep Foundation has found poor sleep habits to be such a part of obesity that they want obesity therapists to consider this issue in the fight against obesity with as much importance as diet and exercise. The proof came in 2004 when a … Continue reading
