Why I Quit the Atkins Diet

After being on the Atkins diet for a few months, I decided it was time for me to quit. I put a lot of thought into this decision, and concluded that it was best that I get off this diet. My reasons for quitting the Atkins diet might be different from everyone else’s reasons. Despite what is commonly believed, I don’t think that people are supposed to stay “on a diet” forever. There are some exceptions to this rule, however. If a doctor prescribes a certain type of diet for a person, based on that person’s health, then it might … Continue reading

Pleasing the Special Dieters at Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving in our family means satisfying quite a few special dietary needs. There are vegetarians, diabetics, people with high cholesterol, and even a child who needs to eat high fat, high salt foods. I don’t want to prepare eight different meals and spend $400, but there needs to be options so that everyone can enjoy Thanksgiving. If you are in a similar situation, there are endless resources to help you not just get through the meal preparation, but wow your guests as well. For the vegetarians, consider little things, like leaving the turkey drippings out of the gravy. That way … Continue reading

Dieting Myths – Part 1

After losing 30 pounds last year, I gained 10 back over the holidays. I know that is not horrible, but by eating poorly and not exercising, I know I am in trouble. I thought now might be a good time to remind myself of dieting myths as I try to get back on the bandwagon! #1 – Crash diets are a good way to lose weight! I know I will have some naysayers for this one, but I am not a huge fan of crash diets. I know a lot of women swear by them, but I view dieting as … Continue reading

About the Diabetic Diet

Before I was put on the diabetic diet, I was told by some healthcare professionals that it is really the healthiest diet for anyone to be on – even if they aren’t diabetic. Now, I am not a nutritionist, so I can’t say if that is 100% true or not, but I know I have tried a few diets and the diabetic diet is the easiest to stick with as far as I am concerned. What makes the diabetic diet unlike other diets? Well, I for one don’t really get hungry. That is because on the diabetic diet, you eat … Continue reading

Treats for Pets with Dietary Restrictions

When it comes to food, my two dogs are very different. Lally is the sort of dog who will only eat when she’s hungry; I could leave a bowl of food out all day and she’d regulate herself. Moose is a chow hound; he’ll eat until there’s nothing left and then eat some more. I can’t leave food out for him, because he’d never stop eating! It’s very hard to manage Moose’s weight when he never turns down food. The vet suggested that we avoid chewy snacks — they generally have a higher fat content than crunchy, dry snacks have. … Continue reading

What Are Low-Carb Diets?

Low carbohydrate diets aren’t new. They have been around for for decades. The Atkins Diet was introduced in 1972 but, even before that, bodybuilders were using low carbohydrate diets to get ripped before competitions. Since the Atkins Diet is the most common low-carb diet, we’ll start with that. Essentially, the Atkins Diet is done through a series of phases. The first phase is the weight loss phase and is used to get the body into ketosis, a state in which the body burns fat for energy rather than glucose (blood sugar). During the first phase of the Atkins Diet, you … Continue reading

Momma’s on a Diet: Week 2 Weigh-In

Following the huge 8 lb loss last week, I was a little concerned this week that despite sticking to my Weight Watchers program and not going over my allocated points at all, I wouldn’t have lost any weight. I didn’t expect to have gained weight, but the most I figured to have lost was about 1 lb. My logic on this is that I lost so much in week 1 that my body would need to adjust to this before losing anything more. It was with some relief that when I stood on the scales, (and found the courage to … Continue reading
