A Type II Diabetes Journey: When You're Sick

I've been sick all week. Not with the sniffles or a mild cold, but with a knock-you-off-your-feet, scramble-your-brain-in-pain virus. It happens once a year. The virus rips through the Northwest, depleting workers' sick time, lowering attendance at school significantly, and driving some to their doctor's offices.

If I weren't relegated to "Dr. Duty" in the military healthcare system, I probably would've gone in, even if it were just for some pain relief. Instead, I sit here with my Theraflu Severe Cold Formula and my quilt wrapped around me. They offer some comfort, especially the heavy quilt. In a week where real comfort has been difficult to come by, the heft and the warmth of a homemade quilt is excellent. Food has been another source of comfort. I'm trying to look at that statement as a positive, rather than a negative aspect of my life.

It's really difficult to stay on a diet when you're sick, especially one with calorie restrictions. Who am I kidding? It's pretty near impossible. I've been downing 100% juice bars like they were water - at 140 calories apiece. Add to that hearty stews and soups (which, of course, need the bread and crackers with them), and a lot of liquids, and I've been significantly over my goals every day this week. You know what? It doesn't matter.

Right now, anything that will relieve my discomfort is worth it. The weight has waited (weighted?) for a decade. Another week isn't going to make any significant difference. As long as I get back on the weight-loss horse when I'm feeling better, this can be viewed as a temporary setback. (Please let it be temporary!)

Weight loss is important. So many other health issues have direct correlation to being overweight. But sometimes even doing a good thing for your health has to take a back seat to immediate concerns. Here's to next week showing better results.

Starting weight (Christmas 2006): 203.0

Today's weight: 190.8

My thanks go to the regular weight loss bloggers as I guest blog each Sunday night. Make certain to read all of their interesting and informative posts.
