100 Things Every Marriage Should Experience Before Dying

Have you heard of the book 100 Things To Do Before You Die? (Not to be confused with 101 Things To Do Before You Die, which, while the title’s similar, is an entirely different beast of a book and was written by a different author, Richard Horne.) Dave Freeman, one of the 100’s co-authors, died this past August. I’ve never read the book, but I certainly got a sense of the man. Here’s a snippet from his obituary in the Los Angeles Times: The “100 Things” approach later swept the publishing industry, said Neil Teplica, who wrote the book with … Continue reading

Yo-Yo Dieting Isn’t That Bad for You

Really, honestly, and truly I read this today. I had always heard that going on a diet, to lose weight, and then to regain it was just a bad proposition. I’ve heard that it makes losing weight for the long haul much harder to do and I’ve heard that it isn’t that healthy for you either, increasing your risk of heart disease, and cancer. But apparently, losing weight and then regaining has no ill health effects on your heart or your waistline in and of itself. In a research study, following several men and women, statistics showed that yo-yo dieting, … Continue reading

Should We Call Our Kids Fat?

Well, the obvious answer to this question is no. When adults put labels on kids, it can cause psychological problems and it can also generate behavior that is not productive. A number of articles appeared in various papers today discussing this same question. Experts are asking whether or not it is okay for parents to tell their children or their teenagers that they are fat. The debate is over language that the government uses is too fuzzy and gentle and doesn’t cut to the heart of the matter. But the problem is – telling someone that they are fat or … Continue reading

Breastfeeding Full Term Multiples

I must say, before I begin this blog that there are a few things to note. First of all, you’ll notice in the title that this article is for full-term multiples. Nursing preemies (which many multiples are) is an entirely different story. I’ll blog on that later. Secondly, you can breastfeed more than one successfully and exclusively. However, breastfeeding two is a tricky proposition. Most mothers of twins that I know or have talked to over the last few years, usually supplement with formula, especially in the early days. I don’t say this to discourage you, but I say this … Continue reading

The Good News & The Bad News

According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) there is good news from the frontlines of the war on obesity. Personally, I dislike the term war on obesity – and battle of the bulge is just so much not better. Let’s just say that statistics indicate that the number of women considered obese has not risen since a 2000 survey. While women are still heavy or obese – there is stabilization of the number across the board. The bad news on the other hand is that the number of obese children rose from 14% to 17% and the number of … Continue reading
