Water Gets a Face Lift with Hint

I love to drink water. Nothing is more refreshing than a cold glass of water. However, my kids are not huge water fans. I allow juice and milk at meal times and water throughout the day. Many times I don’t even buy juice due to the amount of sugar it contains. Whole fruit is far better for a child than a glass of juice. Yet, my kids are always jazzing up their water either with a squeeze of lemon or lime. I understand how boring water can become. However, the options out there normally contain too many calories or sugar. … Continue reading

Healthy Dose of Watermelon

My family loves watermelon. Every year we buy a ton of them and quickly eat all of it. My two year old is especially fond of them. She can make a dinner out of just watermelon if I’d let her. Most kids are the same way and devour this beautiful fruit. I never gave the unassuming watermelon too much thought as a health food. I assumed it was a nice way to hydrate as it consists mostly of water as the name suggests. However, this lovely pink fruit has more to it than simple water. Watermelon contains is hydrating. Watermelon … Continue reading

Tempted to Cheat…on a Diet

As I walk through my house I am on a high knowing that all day I have stuck to my diet. Feeling proud of myself I make my way to the kitchen for a scheduled afternoon snack of veggies and cottage cheese. Certain nothing can break my stride I open the refrigerator door to find nothing. No veggies. No cottage cheese. Nothing. Quizzically I look at the calendar on my fridge and realize its Friday. Friday is day I go to the grocery store. I’m too hungry to go the grocery store now. Mercy, I’ve eaten nothing but rabbit food … Continue reading

Health Benefits and Claims of Tea

The potential health benefits of tea have been circulating for quite some time. While there has been no conclusive evidence there is enough reason to take a second look at how drinking tea may benefit your health. Tea is the most consumed liquid aside from water in the world. So if even a small fraction of those people are experiencing health benefits that could affect a large number. Or, it could simply mean that tea is a coincidental factor in the diet of the masses. For real answers, we need to look to scientific research. While the research is not … Continue reading

Keeping Portions in Mind: Part 2

Now that we are armed with what proper portions really are from Keeping Portions in Mind: Part 1, we need to learn how to manage a slim sized order in a super sized world. Since the 1950s portion sizes have changed dramatically. A typical cheeseburger and fry meal in the 1950s would average about 600 calories while today the same meal would average double that amount. A bagel today contains over 200 calories more today than in the 1950s. When we sit down to a meal, we may be consuming not one but almost two complete meals at one time. … Continue reading

What’s in your child’s lunchbox?

The biggest influence on how our children eat is you, the parent. That influence does not end with a packed lunch. We still need to be vigilant to provide healthy options even when processed, sugary, prepackaged foods are so much easier to pack. The 100 calorie cookie packs look to be a nice idea but they are loaded with sugar. Peanut butter and jelly is always a hit but jelly is packed with high fructose sugar. What kid doesn’t love the crunch of a bag of potato chips? Yet, chips contain high amounts of fat. How about a nice turkey … Continue reading

Easy Ways to Burn Calories

I’ve slacked off on the gym, so now I am looking for ways to burn calories. I can across this list of easy ways to burn 100 calories from Our Lady of Weigh Loss, Janice Taylor. These are things I could (and probably should be doing): Vacuuming This I can do! If you vacuum for just 25 minutes, you can burn 100 calories. Janice, however, lives in a New York City apartment that only takes 10 minutes to vacuum, so she volunteers to do her neighbor’s vacuuming as well. Who is going to turn that kind of offer down? Drink … Continue reading

The Best of Fitness Intentions …

This should have been posted yesterday, but I am going to consider Sunday an object lesson for everyone. Some days just don’t happen how we plan them too. Sunday, April 2nd did not go as I planned. I wanted to post a great big welcome to the April Spring Forward 30 Day Challenge, but the hour we lost as time sprung forward threw a monkey wrench at the entire day. So, for those of you who dived in and started your workout plans yesterday: CONGRATULATIONS! For those of you who were waiting for me to get the ball rolling, get … Continue reading
