You may have heard the Paleo diet described as “eat like a caveman”. Other names for it include: The Stone Age diet, or the Ancient diet. No matter what name you know it as, the overall concept of the Paleo diet is the same. The Paleo diet is an attempt to replicate the diet that humans who were alive during the Paleolithic age would have eaten. It is always a good idea to consult a doctor before choosing to start a new diet. Where did the Paleo diet come from? The Paleo diet has been around for longer than you … Continue reading

The Truth About Your Diet During Pregnancy

One of the assumptions I made about pregnancy prior to becoming pregnant is I’d have a diet-related Get out of Jail Free card.  I knew that there are certain foods it’s best to avoid, but I thought at least I’d have a free pass to eat, well, not quite as much as I wanted, but to feel a bit more guilt-free about evening ice cream binges. That turned out not to be the case at all.  First off, the whole “eating for two” thing isn’t true.  At most, you should eat for one and a quarter.  In addition to that, … Continue reading

When You’re Ready to Lose the Baby Weight

My baby is 9 months old, and I just recently started a diet. I hate diets. But, I’m motivated to lose that baby weight. In the past, I was motivated a little sooner than 9 months. I guess this time around it took me a little longer to get motivated because of the diet restrictions I had while I was nursing the first 5 months. Being deprived of so many foods was hard for me, so I was in no hurry to deprive myself again. But, as I stepped on the scales, and saw myself in pictures, I realized that … Continue reading

Cats Eating People Food

Yesterday a good friend of mine posted on her Facebook that she caught her two cats eating coleslaw. It’s not the first time her cats have gone after people food; one ate a strawberry last week, and when they were kittens she had to lock them in a room when I’d have lunch at her house. Otherwise they’d jump up on the table, put their paws in our water glasses, and otherwise view our plates as their personal buffet. When I think about it, I can recall many incidents of cats I knew eating people food. My old roommate’s cat … Continue reading

10 Breastfeeding Facts from WHO

American society seems to have a different attitude toward breastfeeding sometimes than the world at large. I was shocked when I started nursing my first child a few years ago to learn that the World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding until the age of 2. I had always thought that one year old was the recommended age, although I knew that many cultures breastfeed far beyond that. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding until 1 year. I have always breastfed my children until about 14 months of age. I am determined to breastfeed. This has not been an easy task … Continue reading

Should You Count Calories?

Counting calories has gone by the wayside. No one liked doing it so every diet marketer tried to find ways to eliminate counting calories. Crazy Diets: The 3 Day Diet

The 3 Day Diet is sometimes mistakenly referred to as the Cleveland Clinic diet. Considered a fad diet as there is no proof it works as magically as its claim. Supposedly the combination of the foods in the diet causes a metabolic change to boost your body into high gear and burn fat. One is supposed to follow the eating plan exactly making no deviations. It is then followed up by four days of eating regularly and then the diet is repeated once again. The problem arises when the plan only allows for about 1,000 calories a day. Instead of … Continue reading
